I suppose a reason I like New Year’s Eve is it closes out the Christmas season. It’s the cherry on top of our high spirits. Christmas and Easter are two major holidays, each stretching out over a week, with Easter the more solemn one. The yin and the yang of Western cultural holidays. I love the sparkle, glitter and gaiety of Christmas completed by New Year’s Eve, and the anticipation of Spring and the renewal of Easter. I’m also happy Easter hasn’t become commercial like Christmas.
I prefer eating to drinking, however this year I intend to open a bottle of Champagne.

Happy New Year, Debra. We have already had our glass of wine to bring in the New year, although there are a couple of hours to go yet. Fireworks have been going off in the distance tonight, and no doubt there will be more. I like the way New Year ends off the season too as we start a new year. We used to go to a party and ring in the new year, but we are getting a bit old to travel late at night now. However, we will see family over the next day or two. Enjoy the champagne!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Trish! When we’re young we think less of the dangers of driving home after others might have had a few drinks. I had fairly chilled parents but my mother always emphasized that danger. I always liked the short commutes home after a late night party so Mom and I were in sync. After I moved to Manhattan it was the same. I liked walking a few blocks home after ringing in the New Year. Early on, I spent it with friends at a venue in Greenwich Village, but it was years, and I can’t remember how I got home. Perhaps it convinced me to celebrate closer to home. :)
