Pond's Anti-Aging Skincare

Everybody knows it's been around forever because your grandma loved using it. In addition to cold cream Pond's was once called vanishing cream and Pond's extract. It was invented and patented in the United States by pharmacist Theron T. Pond in 1846 after he discovered a healing tea extracted from witch hazel could heal skin abrasions.

Today Unilever owns Pond's, and what's new about the skincare line is its anti-aging ingredients -- namely vitamin B3 and Retinol complex (Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Collegian) that are added to the formula to visibly reduce the signs of aging and wrinkles. This is good news for consumers because Pond's continues to be inexpensive and readily available at the local drugstore, as well as, at Walmart and Target.

Grandma knew the value of time-honored great skincare and now her granddaughters can also save a few bucks by giving the 21st century Pond's elixir with its anti-aging properties in the forms of serum and cream a try. Pond's Rejuveness Serum, Face Cream, and Eye Cream (sells as a trio) for under $25, which is a real steal for potions with anti-aging ingredients. Separately, you'll find the beauty items priced as low as $7.50 depending on which one you buy.

A good tried-and-true moisturizer just got a little better without breaking the bank!

Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Max

Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 with hydrating ingredients has a MAX formula with 20% more retinol. It also contains vitamin B3, which hydrates and brightens the skin and promotes elasticity, plus fights free radicals. If your skin isn't used to maximum strength retinol, stick with Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 in its regular strength. More retinol doesn't always mean better, you just need enough effective anti-aging ingredients -- here, retinol ... and to use the potency of retinol that is tolerated by your skin. To be effective, you must use it regularly. If too harsh, making your skin red and raw, you then stop using it.

I like the availability of a greater retinol strength in Olay, a non-prescription potion, for people who have been using the regular formula for a time and feel it's time to bump the potency up. To be sure, if mistaken their skin will indicate its need to return to the lesser strength!

As regular readers know, Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 and Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair are 2 of the drugstore brands of anti-aging night creams I fancy. Each works without emptying your wallet.

Be on the look out at T.J. Maxx for this
Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair 2-pack for $16.99, a steal! Full-sizes and about half the price of one item alone at the drugstore (when not on sale). The instructions say to apply the retinol oil and follow with the retinol cream. The oil adds another 3% of retinol for double the wrinkle-fighting power (know that 2.5% is considered a good and standard amount in a non-prescription retinol formula).

If not already using a retinol skin cream potion, start slowly. You may have to apply the cream once a week, then twice a week, then increase to every other night before your skin tolerates it every night.

Choices are good for consumers, especially if they land on the shelves at T.J. Maxx. Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Max is another effective budget-friendly formula to know about.

You are left with money in your pocket and a smile on your face ... winkles that soften or perhaps are erased.🎃🙂

Anti-Aging Beauty To Put On Your Radar: 3 Products For Daytime

As readers know, a focus of THE SAVVY SHOPPER is to find over-the-counter skincare that really works, i.e., serums and moisturizers which contain all the potent anti-aging ingredients medical science says are effective for less. Not every product is dirt cheap, yet when sold at retailers like Target, Walmart, Ultra, local drugstores, and Amazon, you can take advantage of deals to further lower the cost of already well-priced products. When you see the 2-for-1 deals and markdowns, etc., it's the time to pounce!

The following are 3 Anti-Aging Skincare Items For Your Daytime regiment:

1) Roc Multi Correxion Revive + Daily Glow Vitamin C -  Forumated with 10% vitamin C to brighten and tighten skin. Dermatologists tell us the only true serum we need for our daytime skincare routine is a vitamin C serum with the right combination of other ingredients like vitamin E to help the vitamin C work better. As we age the production of our collagen and skin cell turnover slows down. A potent vitamin C blend used daily helps to speed it up again! The serum is all you really need to buy but in winter some customers may like to apply a heavier cream formula to fight dry skin.

The next 2 recommendations are for 2 sunscreens -- our numero ono, most important, bar none, anti-aging skincare potion. The skin doctors recommend wearing sunscreen every day of the year: summer days, sunny days, autumn days, winter days, snowy days, spring days, and rainy days. Why is something like the sun's golden rays that feels so good so aging to the skin especially noticeable on our face where we don't want lines, wrinkles, and age spots? It just is!

It's vital to let 15 minutes of the sun hit our skin about twice a week for the very necessary production of vitamin D for our overall good health, yet if the sun hits the area of my face, personally I react like the Wizard of Oz's Wicked Witch of the West as she is melting because she got hit with a bucket of water! To avoid the drama and public spectacle, I take the preventative step of wearing visors and hats outdoors in summer for the purpose of shielding my face from the sun, averting the alarm followed by a meltdown; and no one is the wiser!😉

2) Cocokind Daily SPF 32 - A mineral-based sunscreen that uses non-nano zinc oxide; protects against UVA and UVB rays; defends skin against blue light and pollution; plus is lightweight and non-greasy.

3) Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen 30+ (or 50+) Sensitive Skin - A mineral sunscreen containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide offering both UVA and UVB protection for sensitive skin. The formula goes on white yet turns invisible as you rub it into your skin. Sun protection of 30 is plenty. What is important with sun protection is reapplying sunscreen every few hours. The dangers of the higher numbers include they don't provide much more or greater protection to the degree people think, and people then don't reapply sunscreen as often as they should. This brand is also water-resistant.

Knowledge (equipped with plenty of elixir choices) is a consumer's best friend in finding the best deals. You'll know which brands are stellar and recognize a good price. So put these 3 additional beauty products on your radar for daytime use.  When the price is right, try them!

Target Your Skincare: Naturium

Photo: Yahoo

Although I try to give equal coverage to all the categories featured on the blog, I'm finding great affordable skincare lately and so won't hold back: A 3rd beauty blog (plus my thoughts) in a row.🙂 💋

Target Express stores are opening all over Manhattan. As concerned as I am for Mom and Pop shops (which I also support), I can't deny liking the decent selection, convenience and savings on every day staples at the big box retailer. In the Target aisles, there are some top-notch skincare, including cleansers, serums and moisturizers costing $25 or less. The next time you go, take a look at Naturium. Online ... 31 products are listed. At the brick and mortar stores, what's available on any given day can be hit or miss, therefore if I see a frequently used item in stock on the shelf, I buy two.

Naturium is a skincare brand launched by Ben Bennett and Susan Yara in 2020. (In fact, Ms. Yara who is also a YouTube influencer, got in trouble with her fans by promoting the brand on her channel without telling them she is a co-owner!) The products are formulated to be natural, clean, non-toxic and green. They are vegan, except for the Intense Overnight Sleeping Cream which uses ethically sourced honey. Everything made is cruelty free, paragon free, skin-compatible, artificial fragrance-free, and dermatology tested. Naturium proudly follows science to continue to learn and improve its skincare. Sounds good, no?

Photo: hip2save
The most popular Naturium items include: Vitamin C Complex Serum, Retinol Complex Cream, Vitamin C Super Serum Plus, Niacinamide Gel Cream 5% and Niacinamide Serum 12% Plus Zinc.

The cost of buying 5 products, even reasonably priced, adds up; so I recommend starting with the Vitamin C Complex for daytime use and Retinol Complex Cream for nighttime use. The pair is likely all you'll need. Consider the Vitamin Super C Serum Plus (it is a mixture of vitamin C and Retinol, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide) if you can only afford to buy a single face serum. Ideally, you want to use these ingredients separately, yet a better one (as a combo) than none! The other serums address individual skincare concerns that you may or may not have, so save your money when possible.

How impressive that a new beauty brand like Naturium started by a YouTube influencer, got Target to sell its products in such a short span of time! We all have brilliant ideas and dreams (just ask me!), but it takes luck, hard work, perseverance, connections and money to get them to market!💋👏

A head's up: The next blog will introduce you to another gemstone. Watch this space on Thursday!

RoC Retinol Correxion Line Smoothing Daily Serum

RoC Retinol Correction Line Smoothing Daily Serum is another effective retinol available at your local drugstore. In addition to drugstores, Walmart, Target, Amazon and Ulta also carry it, so it's easy to find and perhaps even catch a sale! I often say, choice is THE SAVVY SHOPPER'S  best friend.

Now let's review what retinol is and what it does for aging skin: Retinol is the non-prescription derivative of prescription strength Retin-A, the gold standard in anti-aging skincare. With regular use, both retinol and Retin-A help speed up skin cell turnover, collagen production, plus lighten uneven skin tone and age spots.

As it turns out, stronger (i.e., prescription strength Retin-A) isn't always better. What matters most is consistent use. The strength of Retin-A is something the skin tolerates only after a long period of use. Virgin skin can't tolerate it, and sensitive skin may never tolerate it. But non-prescription strength Retinol, used regularly, offers similar anti-aging properties with less of harsher Retin-A's unpleasant side effects.

Not only does RoC's powerful Retinol Correxion Line Smoothing Daily Serum deliver anti-aging benefits, it provides serious hydration; and the retinol in this formula is time-released which preserves the effectiveness of the vitamin A derivative by keeping it stable so it can work over a 12-hour period. As a time-released formula, it is less likely to cause irritation. So if another retinol leaves your skin, dry, red and raw, this one should be more comfortable yet still work. What's more, while the retinol is working to smooth your lines and winkles, two moisturizing ingredients, ashwagandha and squalane deliver 12 hours of time-released hydration.

Many women like to apply a rich moisturizing night cream before bed, so a thicker cream formula is also available.

Anti-aging skincare can be super expensive, so put THE SAVVY SHOPPER'S recommended retinol brands on your radar. They start at good price points before promotions. Be sure to catch the sales to look your unlined best while staying in the green!

The Inkey List Skincare

Photo: lookfantastic

THE SAVVY SHOPPER features another effective skincare line based on science you can afford to use daily. Choice galore and deals are a consumer's best friends to keep our wallets happy! The Inkey List offers a wide array of products containing potent ingredients that are normally 3 - 4 times more expensive.

The following are your 3 basic essentials, yet at such budget-friendly prices averaging under $10 a bottle (and a few multi-ingredient formulas running about $15) you could add an item to treat a special skin care concern of yours if you wish.

Here are the bare-bone elixirs I think you need in your skincare regiment:

1) The Inkey List Retinol serum

Contains:

  • 1% stabilized retinol (derived from Vitamin A, which the skin converts to retinoic acid, speeding up skin cell turnover. Enhances collagen production, evens skin tone and lightens age spots.)
  • 0.5 granactive retinoid
  • Squalane (for hydration and smoothing).
Directions: Use a pea size amount at night to prevent or treat lines and wrinkles, the visible signs of aging.

2) The Inkey List Vitamin C 30% serum

 Contains:

  • 30% pure, stable, L-ascorbic Acid. This serum targets the signs of aging by brightening the skin. It also fights free radicals and pollution.
Directions: This is your daytime serum, apply it in the morning.

3) The Inkey SPF Daily 30 Sunscreen

Contains:
  • 22% non-nano zinc oxide (offering both UVA and UVB protection against the sun).
  • 1% Pollustop® (Shields the skin from pollutants and premature aging.)
  • 2% Shea Butter complex (moisturizes and calms the skin).
Directions: Use during the day all-year-round as the last step after a moisturizer.

Sure you could buy gentle baby sunscreen at your local drugstore for less, but if you want a $15 splurge for the extra anti-aging ingredients, you can at least afford it at these low prices.

Now where can you buy them? Available on the Inkey List website; Sephora; Ebay; and Amazon, the brand is never tested on animals.

Splurge and save simultaneously: What's on your Inkey List?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
💟Extra tips:

[1] If you buy thbaby sunscreen from your local drugstore and your 2 serums from The Inkey List, your entire costs for your daily anti-aging skin routine is under $25 for all the products you need. Adding the splurge Inkey List sunscreen brings the costs to under $35.

[2] Anti-aging routines begin by eating a healthy diet, which gets easier and cheaper in the spring and summer months. Here's what I bought from my fabulous Manhattan fruit street vendor on my way home ... every bite as beneficial to the skin as the potions you put on it:
I like to wash all my fruit before putting much of it in the refrigerator. Oh yes, with refrigeration you lose some of the deliciousness, but again, costs and convenience win. I leave a few unrefrigerated pieces out, but do refrigerate the rest. I have fresh blueberries, strawberries, apricots, plums, pears and mangos. Not in the photo, avocados from another day!

BTW: I also wash my potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, eggplant and asparagus (Asparagus steams are yuk, yet nutritious.) before putting them away, a repetitive job I hate doing! But when I cook, I like dropping clean-ready produce into a pot. I'd rather not have a job (cleaning) before I do a job (cooking). Unless buying a meal kit, you have to do the undesirable yourself. It's worth getting more for less. I'm a mean, clean machine!😎

Anti-aging Skincare Update

Choices help Savvy Shoppers save money, and it's fun to try new products. I love finding drugstore skincare for less with effective anti-aging ingredients that science says really works! Like a drugstore, Ulta offers a wide selection, convenience and reasonable prices, so lump the beauty retailer together with drugstores, as places to find good skincare on a budget. The following anti-aging elixirs should be on your list to try:

For day -
1) The Ordinary Buffet - The exciting ingredient in it is Matrixyl™ 3000 peptide complex. It firms, hydrates, brightens and smooths the texture of the skin. Price: $14.80.

2) The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2% - This is a high concentration of vitamin C with squalane (a moisturizer) - Some customers complain of a burning sensation, but I don't find it too intense perhaps because I apply it after The Ordinary Buffet mentioned. You get used to the slight sting which lessons over time with use. Vitamin C Suspension brightens, hydrates and smooths the skin's surface. It reduces fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. This combo from The Ordinary is half the price of my usual serums adding up to a lot of savings per year. Cost: $5.75.

3) Sunscreen - Right now I use a Wallgreens (drugstore generic brand) with SPF 50 made for babies. Best anti-aging product you can buy! Cost: 2 for $5.

For night-
4) CeraVe Skin Resurfacing Retinol - Has .03% Retinol, 3 effective ceramides, licorice root (a skin brighter), and niacinamide, as well as, moisturizing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and shea butter. Retinol speeds up cell turnover. Ceramides are fatty acids that act as barriers to the skin to keep moisture in and microorganisms out. Price: $16.95.

5) Azure Hemp & Retinol Sleep Mask - A Korean beauty night cream that is ultra-moisturizing containing rich omega fatty acids, vitamin E and antioxidants. It is not greasy and rivals the quality of its competitors L'Orèal, Olay and Neutrogena yet costs far less. Cost: $14; or $5.99 when T.J. Maxx carries it. The ointment is my T.J. Maxx dreamy-creamy discovery!
6) CeraVe Healing Ointment - A must-have to protect and soothe dry skin all over your body all-year-around. It has hyaluronic acid and ceramides 1, 3, and 6-Li. $17 - $25 at Target, Walmart and drugstores.

Have you ever watched Vloggers on YouTube go on and on with their skincare routines? Sometimes layering more products on their face than dermatologists recommend ... so money down the drain. These 5 products are all you really need for day and night ... letting you save and simplify your skincare simultaneously. I mean, really I just want to get out of my bathroom!🙂

Revive 4 in 1 Micro Needle Facial Roller

I have a curious mind. Blogging gives me an excuse to try new beauty products I might otherwise leave on a retailer's shelf.

Combine my curiously with an interest in beauty (one of THE SAVVY SHOPPER'S 6 lifestyle topics), add T.J.Maxx for less to the mix; and I find myself the unabashed new owner of a Revive 4 in 1 Micro Needle Facial Roller

Yes, poking teeny-tiny microscopic holes in your face is a thing now! They are so small though, they are not considered harmful. Do I see eye rolling? 👀 Oh, don't pretend like me, you're not dying to know if these devices really work! Because ... your nose will grow longer!

Here's what you get in the box:

1) Large 1.5 mm roller (1200 pins) for use on legs, hips and body. (Probably I won't use this one.)

2) Medium 1.0 mm roller (720 pins) for use on cheeks, forehead and neck. (I'll began with this one. I can move it around the eye area too.)

3) Small 0.5 (300 pins) for use around eyes and on lips.

4) A plastic case to store the gadget (and use as a rubbing alcohol soak tub).

It is designed for an at home treatment to mimic a beauty spa procedure. Move the roller in all directions on the area of skin you wish to rejuvenate.

Using micro needle rollers on your face or body will slightly prick the skin. You do feel the sharp needles, but no pain. It is meant to stimulate new collagen growth for younger looking skin. As we age our production of collagen (like everything else) slows down. So the micro needles aim to reverse this unfortunate happening encouraging new collagen growth for softer, smoother skin. If I lose a wrinkle, I'll update my post to let you now.
Photo: Guyer Institute. Airbrushing  and photoshop help too!😅

Reviews by customers of micro needle facial rollers (across brands) are mainly positive. And, it has not been labeled junk science. Used gently and properly, it doesn't hurt to try it. Cost: $13.

Who knew I'd buy one when walking in the door? (By the time I exited the store, they had all flown off the shelf.) As you can see, I've been curious for some time. T.J. Maxx, you got me with this facial roller!

Atoxelene Line Wand

There is a trendy beauty fluid celebrities use to erase wrinkles and promote youthful skin. Have you heard of it? And if so, can you pronounce it?! The name doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it?

Call it Botox on a brush. Reportedly, many A-list stars keep an Atoxelene Line Wand within reach.

Here's why: It hydrates the skin and smoothes fine lines and wrinkles with properties of hyaluronic acid and peptides.

The Atoxelene Line Wand is applied under makeup and before red carpet events to take years off a face. The treatment works immediately, but since it is an intraceutical, the effects are also cumulative, according to Hollywood markup ... um makeup artists. The more you use it, the better your skin looks. Brush it on crow's feet, furrows, frown lines and laugh lines to soften and reduce their appearance. Moreover, its anti-aging ingredients (the peptides) encourage quicker cell turnover and the growth of collagen to keep new expression lines at bay. It's a splurge at $49. The equally popular Atoxelene daily serum costs $149.

For a similar, but cheaper treatment, try Watts Beauty Peptide - Hyaluronic Acid Concentrated Serum Complex with L-Arginine and Silk Amino Acids.

And just for fun, challenge yourself by pronouncing the names of each of these products three times without stammering!
