Home Sweet Home

A hookah uses coal and can run out of water, both hazards in a family dwelling. One smoking session is the potency of inhaling 100 - 200 cigarettes.
It is amazing how much damage one hookha smoker can do to a Manhattan apartment building ... and how long it takes to undo all the turmoil caused by the fire of one careless person. The costs are great, and we are getting a maintenance increase later this year to pay for it, we are told. Management framed the undesirable hike in such politically correct language that you'd never know it had anything to do with the expense of cleaning up after the fire and flooding.

Although I'm happy to be back home there is much to do to get the apartment back to normal. Due to the fire, flood and water damage, I had to clean and paint my entire apartment. My intercom, one of 5 areas where water streamed down, is out. Upon reporting it, I was told that I am "on a list," so I am not alone! Furthermore, furniture, shoes and various items are ruined. My plush 8' by 10' wool area rug is beyond repair. The carpet cleaning company gave me the heartbreaking news hours ago.😓

To replace walls, my cupboards were removed from the kitchen, but surprisingly management did not replace the now weathered and damaged wood, nor broken kitchen (and living room) floor tiles! Through no fault of the excellent Fire Restoration Company, chunks of wood are missing from my cabinets as a result of having to pry them off the walls so the waterlogged walls could be replaced. Floor tiles crumbled due to the flood, plus removing wall moldings to take down walls; and I now have a hole and crumbling wood in the back of one cupboard, which was simply returned to the apartment and put back into place! I asked management to step up ... fix the hole. However, I'm still waiting for resolution.

Additionally, I had to buy a new kitchen stove, but we continue to await for the cooking gas to be turned back on, therefore I eat lots of fruit, avocados and whatever I can microwave, as well as, restaurant food. Eating out gets tiresome when it's a must!

I now make German potato salad with microwaved potatoes, bacon and scrambled eggs! In fact, it is a hybrid potato salad, since eggs do not belong in German potato salad.

Another new dish is Ramen noodles. Please don't judge! How can something so bad taste so good!😄 I add leftover chicken (or cubes of tofu) and frozen mixed vegetables. Delish ... a hot savory (if unhealthy!) microwaved meal.

Usually I make pizza from scratch, yet without gas for the oven, I buy frozen Celeste Pizza Deluxe to which I add: pepperoni, extra cheese and dried spices (garlic, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes). The crust isn't great, but hey, another hot dish!

Thankfully my lovely readers, these are 1st world temporary problems. To be sure, there's no place like home. The building's mayhem makes me sensitive to the plight of chronic world hunger and homelessness, which are not temporary.

Suffice it to say, strawberries and blueberries; melted cheddar on grainy bread; and um, nacho tortilla chips are my friends! A gal needs to keep up her energy to forge on!

  1. The hookah looks so dangerous - a disaster waiting to happen! It is easy to see how a fire could be started, as it was. I am so sorry you have had such a long wait for repairs, and that not everything was put back as it was. In fact I find it quite amazing, but then I have not been in this position in an apartment building myself. You are being very innovative in finding ways to make dinner without a stove :) good for you, and Good Luck. I hope all is fixed very soon.

  2. Dearest Debbie,
Oh good grief, what an endless saga this is, caused by one idiot...
The last photo says a lot.
Are you by any means covered by insurance for all your losses? I sure hope so.
And than raising the costs by the end of the year to smear it out over all inhabitants... not very nice! Were they not covered in a decent way?!
Love your attitude for pushing on and still making the very best of it.
    Big hugs,
    Mariette

    1. I have home insurance, yet am still out of money having to replace stuff that formally didn't need replacing.

Our building doesn't live up to its responsibilities as it did years ago. Today that fairness is not a certainty.

    2. Sadly Debbie, an insurance is often an umbrella for when it not rains but IF you need it, it always falls short... plus all the aggravation of time spent on things that got caused by someone else.

    4. Yes, very true, Mariette. And yet everyone should have homeowners insurance. After witnessing the aftermath of the fire, I see why so many buildings are smoke-free.

    5. Well, the first thing I should say is that I am happy to hear that you are finally back home, but the second thing is that it appears lots more work needs to be done before it's "home, sweet home" again. I am so sorry you are going through all this.

How many innocent people find themselves the victims of the carelessness and inconsideration of others? It's maddening, especially when those you count on to help make things right take a "shrug-the-shoulder" attitude -- "You're on the list." And then to add insult to injury, they have the chutzpah to raise your maintenance fees due to the damage. Unbelievable!! Isn't the building insured against this sort of thing? And where is the woman responsible in all of this? I am really upset for you. Injustice does that to me.

Sounds as if you are coping beautifully. Keep up the good work and keep us posted on progress.

      Warmest wishes,

      M-T

    6. I greatly appreciate your support, Marie-Thérèse Norris. It helps me to forge ahead!

The hookah smoker is staying in a hotel a couple of blocks away (since the night of January 2nd, after midnight of the fire). I happen to know because when I was forced out of my apartment, I walked over to check its availability of rooms. Fortunately, I discovered she was staying there and choose another hotel!!. Even before the fire, I found her to be an oddball and difficult person, but management ignored the problem of her smoking and noctural activities. A Mariette in the neighborhood was booked up, so I ended up staying about 16 blocks away -- the only hotel where I could get a room the dates I needed to check in. But the hotel worked out fine, still close enough to swing by here and get mail and check on progress.

The hookah smoker's apartment was all burned out, so she gets everything new and restored. We, who live directly below her, are not so lucky. Our floor tiles and cabinets are water damaged along with being ripped out to resore walls, but the building simply put damaged cabinets back after the replacement of walls. Yes the building has insurance, but are not taking responsibility, as well as, are ignoring my emails and requests fix holes. The tiles are not even up for discussion. The coordinator (who works for management) simply told me I COULD put in a new floor tiles and that my cabinets are not new ... totally ignoring the issure that they were solid and not broken up before the fire and flood and management seems to be shirking their responsibility. As I experienced, management does not fix what they will not acknowledge. It is evident how that course of action worked out for the building. Thousands of dollars cleaning up after a major fire that affected and inconvenienced the entire building! Awful and not right to say the least.
