Happy Thanksgiving Friends

This year I'm especially thankful for family and friends.

As a caregiver, I'm thankful my very senior mother is not bedridden but walks inside the home with a walker. She can walk to the bathroom; and for all the foods she'll no longer eat she's surprisingly healthy, strong, and doesn't require any prescription drugs to make any of her bodily functions work properly. I'm slightly in disbelief. How is this possible on such a limited diet? She is strong enough to be safely bathed in a shower chair, which is such a huge help to a caregiver. She gets a complete spa treatment of skin, hair, and nails twice a week from me. I am surprised at how fast her hair grows. A podiatrist told me that all elderly people have nail fungus, yet my mother's nails are white and strong with no nail fungus. They grow fast too, and we must cut them weekly. Her good health for her age is a blessing.

Moreover, I'm thankful for my hometown friends and neighbors who are what we tend to call good people for short. Each one is a godsend to know. They watch our backs and property and give us lots of joy with their camaraderie and kind hearts. I love spending time with them and keeping up with their families. Our bonds make life meaningful and interesting!

Additionally, I'm thankful for my Manhattan friends, one of whom moved this year to Atlanta Georgia. But we all keep in touch regularly by telephone. Luckily I see them occasionally when we're in the same place, and when out of town by phone and texting. With New York friends, spacing out in-person visits isn't uncommon even when both parties are in New York City as New Yorkers tend to lead very active lives.

This holiday season, we miss our dear friend, Sheila, who lost her battle with breast cancer in June 2023. Life is bittersweet and it makes you appreciate loved ones even more.

I'm grateful I have hometown and New York friends who I'll know for the rest of our days. In both locations, they are good people with kind hearts whose companionship I cherish and thoroughly enjoy.

I'm also grateful for a few blogging and Facebook friends, who reach out from across the miles ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒ to support me. I suppose generosity and kindness know no bounds. Readers and fellow bloggers, you touch my heart! I enjoy connecting and hearing your thoughts. A special thank you for becoming a kindred spirit!ๆ—…

Let's Be Grateful This Thanksgiving

In the world of hard knocks, COVID has reminded us of what we intuitively know but don't always let inform our actions. The world is interconnected. Whether we're talking about a disease, healthcare, global warming, or sharing the earth's resources, we need to look after each other to survive. If you simply care for yourself, eventually everybody parishes.

Humans are basically good ... and selfish. "Love one another" is hard to follow sometimes, isn't it? Because emotions, insecurity and selfishness creep in. Yet if we only tend to our own tiny bubble everyone suffers. When COVID dies in 2021, I hope we keep its "We're all in it together" lessons. The year has been tough, but I'm grateful for the red flag of "must-do" some things better for humans and our country and world.
No turkey this year. I'm thinking: a chicken breast, cornbread dressing, sweet potatoes and broccoli.
Personally, I think President-Elect Joe Biden is setting the right compassionate tone backed by science and facts to lead our country. I'm grateful for the experience and leadership he shows. When I was still in school I was a Congressional intern in Washington, DC and I remember the talk of Biden as a young Senator who was raising his two young boys alone after the tragic car crash of his 1st wife. Sometimes I sat in the Senate balcony with the Congressional press watching floor votes and can remember where Biden sat next to another young Senator Gary Hart and not far away from Senator Ted Kennedy. Once I was sent down to the chambers beside the floor to deliver a note to my boss and of course, delighted, I took in as much as I could of the activity at eye level. So Biden comes to office with a wealth of Washington government experience which should be good in leading the country. I am grateful for his relationships, character, empathy, and experience.

What a quiet Thanksgiving for those of us who won't be traveling to see family, or joining nor inviting friends over for dinner. Yes, the loneliness sets in.

At times how we handle stresses and calamities define us, right? A wise quote I read recently comes from becomingmininalist:
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Be patient and vigilant a little bit longer. Stay healthy friends!!ๆ—…

Happy Thanksgiving From The Mandarin Duck

Each of us can find something to be thankful for, often it's our good health and a comfortable home. Family, friends and the kindness of people we meet. A positive attitude is a blessing. At times life will take a bad turn, but a positive attitude can help us navigate through stresses and challenges until things get better. And ... be thankful for the small stuff!

New York City's newest resident, the Mandarin Duck, with his colorful feathers and bright pink beak, is a native of China. Nobody knows how he got to the pond in Central Park. Did he escape, or did someone put him there? He gets along with the other ducks, doesn't seem to mind the cold and has made himself at home. A gift to the city, and we love him!

Like you, today I will likely stuff myself with turkey, dressing and healthy sides including: green beans, asparagus, carrots, butternut squash, cranberries and of course, pumpkin pie. I like fresh and  healthy foods, so never feel deprived or guilty when eating plenty of them.

From our home to yours, Happy Thanksgiving all!๐Ÿฆƒ

Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving and a day to reflect and count your blessings. Despite the turmoil and divisiveness in the world, we are fortunate to live now and not earlier in history. Could you have survived harsher times?

I am thankful for so many things: family, friends, modern medicine, good sanitation, health, nutritious food, clean water, work, leisure, etc. ... many things that make life better, easier and meaningful. Freedom, education, equality. A safe and comfortable home.

A Happy Thanksgiving To All

This year I'm hosting Thanksgiving for a small gathering, so instead of a Thanksgiving turkey I'm serving a Thanksgiving roast chicken with all the trimmings, including homemade gravy and buttermilk biscuits. I can't wait to dig in!

We are having butternut squash, potatoes, green beans, brussel spouts, carrots and homemade cranberry sauce. I will throw in mushrooms and peas as garnishes. Most likely no one will eat the fresh fruit, namely apples, oranges, tangerines, plums, strawberries and blueberries sitting in the refrigerator because ....

A dinner guest is bringing pie! When asked for suggestions, I said pumpkin, sweet potato and pecan pies are favorites, but what comes through the door will be a surprise!

On this Thanksgiving Day, let us honor our Native American brothers and sisters, whose forefathers shared in the first Thanksgiving. They might be the only Americans, who should have built a wall to keep out immigrants! For 523 years they have been driven off their lands time and again and disrespected. It's time to stop taking what they have ... left. Today they are fighting to save their ancestral burial grounds, as well as, for something even more basic ... clean water! If you are looking to give to worthy causes this holiday season, help them fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline: here with a donation. It's the right thing to do! How can we love our own children and not care about someone else's children!! We owe a debt to the Indigenous People of America, who did not, in fact, build a wall to keep us out.

Oh, I have a feeling it will be a tough Thanksgiving for some families. Perhaps it is best to forget about national politics for the one day and remember our many blessings.

Happy Thanksgiving all!ๆ—…
