Oscar Dress Picks 2026

Every year for fun, I select my favorite Oscar gowns. IMHO this year, not only are Jason Bateman and his wife, Amanda Anka, the best-dressed couple of the evening, but Amanda is wearing my overall favorite Oscar dress of the evening. I love its shimmer, the classy, revealing-yet-not-too-revealing skirt of the gown. It flatters her curves and is ultra glamorous from head to toe.

At the Academy Awards, black dresses were worn in abundance with other neutrals and not much color. The individuality was in the details of the frocks.

Alana Haim in Louis Vuittron (most daring!), EJAE in Dior, Rose Byrne in Dior

Alana Haim’s dress from the front angle is modern and cosmopolitan sans the huge side slits, which I didn’t notice right away. I wonder if it comes with a silk underlayer? I’m thinking, brrrr, air conditioning.

Teyana Taylor in Chanel, Demi Moore in Gucci, Emma Sands in Louis Vuitton

Zoe Saldana in St. Laurent, Gwyneth Paltrow in Giorgio Armani Privè, Anna Cathcart in Jenny Packham.

The last 3 are simple yet elegant dresses. I also love Zoe Saldana’s Cartier and Gwyneth Paltrow’s and Teyanna Taylor’s Tiffany necklaces. (Click the photos to enlarge.)

The overall look of Oscar night was sophisticated and grown-up.

My Favorite Oscar Dresses 2025

All photos courtesy of Getty
Here are my very quick picks of favorite Oscar dresses for 2025. I want to publish them this year before the award winners are selected. I went with the classics.

A few attendees not on my list of favs wore gowns that fashion editors might choose because they are look-at-me different, but I'm sticking with timeless.

There's nothing wrong with an actress having quirky fun with fashion, but I'd always want to look beautiful if walking across a world stage. Sometimes you can't have both, fun and glamour, so the latter would be my ideal.

Some of the gowns which appear black on television are dark blue or dark green. Now perhaps you'd like to share your Oscar gown likes too?

🎥 🎭  🎭  🎭  🎭  🎭 🎭  🎭🎥

Since it's so early I'll give you my predictions on who'll win.

Best Actor: Timothée Chalamet in A Complete Unknown
Best Actress: Cynthina Erivo in Wicked

Why? Impeccable acting combined with their ability to sing (and sing so well!) as their characters gives them the edge to win.

10:41 Update: Oh, the Academy didn't agree with me. I have no doubt these talented and deserving young actors will win in the future.

My Favorite Oscar Dresses 2023

All Photo: Getty images. 1) Margo Robbie looks stunning in a black sequin Armani Prive dress.
Since I select my favorite Oscar dresses every year, there's no need for copy. Here they are as we're watching the show.

2) Malala Yousafza is wearing Ralph Lauren; 3) Hong Chau is in Prada: 4) Michelle Yeoh wears Dior Haute Couture
5) Nichole Kidman is dressed in Giorgio Armani Prive; 6) Michelle Williams is in custom Chanel: 7) Angela Bassette has on a Moschino dress.

8) Danai Gurira is in a Jason Wu black suede gown.

I tend to pick gowns non-showbiz people dream of wearing, so more glamorous than visionary. Most of us just want to look our pretty-best. Did any of mine make your list?

My Favorite Oscar Dresses 2022

All photos: People.com here. Kirsten Dunst is wearing Christian Lacroix.

It's 8:30 pm and all but one of the major awards are yet to come. Here are my favorite Red Carpet Oscar dresses of the night. My picks are always the timeless classics, and as you know from previous years, I'm not a big fan of ultra-low-cut cleavage so those gowns never make my list. These ladies stand out simply by looking polished and beautiful from head to toe.

Lupita Nyong'o in Prada, Alana Haim in Louis Vuitton, Jessica Chastain in Gucci

Demi Singleton in Miu Miu, Aunjanune Ellis in Atelier Versace, and Rose Perez in Christian Siriano

How many of my favorite Oscar 2022 gowns make your list? And who steals your eye at the 94th Academy Awards?

I'm adding one more: On camera, I see the sparkle and shimmer of the embellishments on Tiffany Haddish's dark green Dolce & Gabbana gown, and she looks stunning in it.

If selecting a gown for myself, I'm practical so it would be Demi Singleton's Miu Miu dress because it doesn't reach the ground and I wouldn't need a handler to arrange my train as I stand. Dress trains don't magically fall into perfect formation for a photo opp so a celebrity's handlers come with them to the Oscars to arrange their dresses for the photos you see. Once upon a time, the night was more carefree and fun with actresses wearing their own clothes from their closets. Nowadays gowns and jewelry are sent to them by well-known designers, and usually, a stylist is hired to curate their choices and put it all together. As a non-attress I would not be working and be able to observe celebrities, party and have fun! Think anybody would talk to me? Oh, I'd better take a friend along.😎

The Oscars 2021: Red Carpet Favorites

French Director Florian Zeller and his wife Marine Delterme

Yes, the Academy Awards is still in progress on television, but it never takes me long to pick my favorites. The telecast is subdued this year without a huge audience. Not much hype leading up to the awards either as nobody could go to the movies for over a year.

But the show must go on, and as you can see, I threw two stylish couples into the fashion mix -- French Bohemian chic 0n top and American elegance to close the blog.

Below are the dresses on my Oscars 2021 best list. There is nothing flashy or over-the-top this year. The attendees look classic and relatively comfortable. It reminds me of bygone days before stars hired stylists, and they wore their own clothes, although I'm fairly sure stylists and dressers were consulted. I'd call this year's outfits safe and lovely.

As a non-celebrity, I never have a problem with safe, timeless fashion. If trading places, I'd go for pretty every time. We can't all be Cher or Billy Porter, nor should we try to be. Perhaps it would be one's only time before millions of viewers, and I'd want to look pretty, not like a Cher or Billy Porter wannabe.

Director Lee Isaac Chung and wife Valerie Chung

Laura Dern is wearing Oscar de la Renta. Reese Witherspoon is in Christian Dior. Viola Davis is in an Alexander McQueen gown. Margot Robbie wears a floral Chanel dress. (All photos: British Vogue.)

So who did I miss? Do you have a favorite Oscar gown to either agree with or add?

Best Dressed At The Oscars 2020

Photos courtesy of Page Six, CNN & Harpers Bazaar: 1) Kaitlyn Dever in Louis Vuitton; 2) Zazie Beetz wearing unknown designer; 3) Renée Zellweger in a custom Armani Privé; 4) Penelope Cruz in Chanel; 5) Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Vera Wang; 6) Brad Pitt wearning a Brioni suit; 8) Margot Robbie in a vintage Chanel; 9) Adam Driver and his wife, Joanne Tucker looking smashing in ??

Here I am publishing my favorite outfits at the Academy Awards while I'm watching the show and before the winners in the major catagories have been announced. I don't want to be influenced by anyone else's list of favorites. It will be fun to see who agrees with me.

Brad Pitt won early, and he's just so cute I had to throw him into the mix. The last part of his acceptence speech when he talked about loading up his car to come to Hollywood, thinking about people he met, and now accepting his award (for what is truly his best performance) in "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood," has me tearing up a little. Touching! Success is a long road.

Also I tossed in Adam Driver and his wife as the most stylish couple. He, too, gives a great performance as an actor in a leading role in "Marriage Story." So he gets a nod from me!

It never hurts to have tuxedos and gowns expertly tailored to fit a person's frame perfectly. We could all look our best if we did. I may shop the racks, but I strive for this courturiered look!

Did you pick any favorites? Enjoy the show.

My Favorite Academy Award Dresses 2019

All photos courtesy of Harpers Bazzar and Getty images

Here are the dresses which caught my eye at this year's Academy Awards. Several that didn't make my list (worn by Emilia Clark and Michelle Yeoh) shimmered and looked beautiful on television, but didn't photograph well. Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet win the award for cutest couple of the evening.

As I look over my selected 10 I notice my practical side emerges: Each dress can be worn again to other galas (which isn't a requirement). Also I do not like to see in between breasts; not that I'm scandalized by it, I simply don't like the look. Moreover, there's nothing wrong with wearing a fun gown, but an Oscar goer should also aim to look glamorous that evening. What if you don't go again? It's your one chance to shine!

My 10 picks are feminine, timeless and flatter the wearer:

1) Marina De Tavira wearing a stunning red Reem Acra gown; 2) Tessa Thompson in a classic black with silver glitter Chanel dress; 3) Amy Adams wearing a shimmering Darren Le Gallo dress,; 4) Tina Fey in a can-never-go-wrong sapphire Vera Wang dress; 5) Letitia Wright wearing a Dior Haute Couture dress; 6) Helen Mirren looking lovely in a pink Schiaparelli gown; 7) Laura Dern in a shapely Rodarte dress; 8) Jason Momoa & Lisa Bonet look adorable in their matching pink Fendi Couture by Karl Lagerfeld outfits; 9) Leslie Bibb in an oo la la pretty lace champagne-colored ??? gown; and finally 10) Elaine Welteroth wearing a darling Celia Kritharioti dress. Click here for a closer look at the dresses.

There ... I published my Oscar list for 2019 before seeing what others think! Which gowns do (or did) you like on the red carpet?
