Lands' End's House Slippers Are Just Right

With leather laces. Six colors - red, pink, navy blue, purple, tan and brown.

Finding the perfect house slippers on a budget can be challenging. Call me parsimonious, but I don't like to spent $50 plus on slippers. Everybody has certain preferences too. For a few years, I wore clog slippers, which truthfully, are not my favorite kind. The clog style is a loose fit, and I worry about tripping and falling down stairs. So recently, I decided to treat myself to a new pair.

Lands' End is a fabulous place to go for variety. It has over 30 styles for men, women and children; a pair to fit every need. My perferences: I like cozy house slippers that don't resemble bedroom slippers, so I can walk down to the lobby or laundry room of my apartment building without changing into regular shoes.

As it turns out I got what I want, a quality, durable pair at a fair price (and a 20% discount). The Women's Suede Moc Slippers have suede uppers and a plush polyester berber lining, which is treated with Agion -- an environmentally safe technology -- that protects against odors, plus wear and tear, allowing you to go sock-less.

Very warm and soft, my new house shoes have extra padding in the footbed. And, I love the rubber soles. I can step outside on the sidewalk for a moment in the winter, if necessary. Someone please tell me, why did I stick with my old, an-accident-waiting-to-happen slippers for so long?

Shopping Online For Savings Is Easy

Online shopping is awesome.  You can save tens and hundreds of dollars on essentials, if you do your homework.

You save money because you have access to many sellers and special deals.  No longer are you limited to just the stores in your local area.  After a thorough search, you can place your order with a merchant, who offers the best value, regardless of his city, state or country.  Always look for quality and free shipping  ... or a steal, so that you get a bargain even if you do pay the shipping charges.

The internet gives you the tools you need to be a savvy comparative shopper.  I use Google's search engine, plus websites such as Pricegrabber, Amazon, and Overstock to pinpoint information.  Whether I need a new laptop, or pillow case, I type in the name of the item to see what my choices are.  A few clicks will pull up a list of sellers, offering the best bang for the buck.

Not having to drive out and haul a product home, saves money also.  My laptop and printer were each delivered straight to my door, free of charge.  Not only do retailers offer free shipping, they post exclusive price reductions on their websites.

If you are shopping for shoes, or a big ticket item like furniture or electronics, look in a few stores first to find the models you like.  Try the shoes on to get your correct size.  Listen to the sound of a stereo system.  Then check online to find them cheaper.  You want to avoid the hassles of returns, when possible.

Only shop online with retailers well known for quality merchandise and super customer care.  Why take unnecessary risks and end up stuck with products that don't work out?  When ordering online, I always read what other customers say about a product and the company under "customer reviews."

There are many online retailers who meet my criteria of “awesome” – i.e., they have great stuff, prices and easy returns.  Favorites include:
Amazon – Books, music, everything
Apple – Computers, ipods, iphones and accessories
Brody's Of Brooklyn – Undergarments.  A family business for over 30 years. Old style customer service and super knowledgeable staff.  If your style has disappeared from department stores, Brody's may have it.  Speak to Douglas.  He won't let you order mistakes.
Canon – All-in-one printers.
Land's End – Everything from outerwear and snow boots to bathing suits and more.
LightingUniverse – Lighting fixtures at unbeatable prices.
Overstock – Jewelry, housewares, furniture, and everything else, too numerous to mention.  Up to 70% off.
Zappos – Shoes, clothes and more.  Free shipping both ways.

And before you buy anything, visit currentcodes and RetailMeNot for extra savings. A reader contacted me to say Fatwallet is gone. (Here what happened to it.)

7 Things I Won't Buy Anymore

More and more I'm embracing minimalism. I try to buy what I need, not more than what I need. By owning less we can reduce clutter, simplify our lives, and gain freedom from having to work just to pay the bills. Living in Manhattan where apartments tend to be small helps me shop mindfully, but I too must resist temptation sometimes!

7 Things I Won't Buy Anymore Include:

1) Shoes & Clothes Like a Fashionista - Once upon a time I bought a motley of fashion-forward shoes and clothes that struck my fancy. Now I'm into a less is more mindset. I have a capsule of classic clothes that I wear over and over. Even my gala clothes I wear time and again. As long as I look polished, coordinated, and appropriate, I no longer care if I wear a dress multiple times. Outside of show business or a public person who delivers televised speeches, do people really remember what we wear? Probably not, and if so I really don't care if they do!

2) Makeup Like A Fashion Model - When applying makeup I go for a little razzle-dazzle but overall I keep my cosmetics fairly natural. I strive to look my best, but I no longer experiment or try to create different looks. The best version of me (lines and all) is fine. Fortunately, superb drugstore brands like Maybelline, L'Oreal, Milani, and Drew Barrymore's Flower are examples of high-quality makeup that make spending on pricey luxe labels totally unnecessary today. I have more lipsticks than I remember buying so I plan to use up my lip colors before buying more.

3) Toilet Seats Like a Town & Country Socialite - I stopped overspending on a toilet seat. I keep it basic by buying the simple but adequate white wooden toilet seats from Home Depot. When workmen enter my bathroom and scratch the paint off my toilet seat by carelessly setting their toolbox on it, replacing it with a factory-new toilet seat is cheap. A basic, inexpensive wooden toilet seat looks great and lasts if you don't abuse it.

4) Sweets & Junk Food Like a 20-Something Year Old - I avoid the middle aisles of a supermarket and I rarely keep bags of my weakness -- salty food-like substances such as corn chips, tortilla chips, or potato chips at home. When out and about, I'll eat a portion of French fries or potato chips, something less likely to happen at home where family sizes of nacho tortilla chips torture me until the bag is empty!

When it comes to candy and sweets I'll have a portion outside of the home. As a rule, if I want cake or French fries at home I must make them from scratch myself. It takes more effort and you have to wait to eat them.

5) Cleaners Like a 20th Century Housekeeper - I clean mostly with white vinegar and water which I mix and keep in a spray bottle. I use the vinegar mixture to mop floors and treat most stains on rugs or upholstery. I scrub my toilet and bathroom fixtures with 3% hydrogen peroxide (which kills germs without removing the varnish off of surfaces like toilet seats). White vinegar combined with baking soda dissolves soap scum. Bleach, Ajax, and Bartenders' Friend are for periodic heavy-duty cleaning. I mix ammonia with water to make my own Windex to clean mirrors and glass. For food spots on clothes, I use dishwashing detergent containing OxiClean. These basic cleaners take care of most household jobs as effectively as more expensive commercial cleaners (which also come in fewer ounces so you must restock more often).

6) Gold Jewelry Like a Multi-Millionaire - This is more my fantasy than a former reality😁. Nonetheless in the past, I bought some fashion jewelry and was more tempted by fine jewelry than I am today. As with clothes and shoes, I have a capsule of fine jewelry and never buy fashion jewelry. The price of gold has risen so much that we no longer get enough for our money. We're charged an arm and a leg for flimsy gold chains and thin bangles. Just say no -- pass on buying expensive skimpy pieces. It's not good value for the money!

7) The Latest Gadgets Like a Techie - I keep my laptops, iPads, and cell phones until they cough and die. We'd go broke trying to keep up with updated gadgets. Every 6 months a new version comes out. As long as what I own works, I continue to use it. After it coughs and dies, I thoroughly enjoy owning the latest faster computer ... for what seems like 15 minutes before a newer model replaces it. Therefore I give up on keeping up!

I'm committed to becoming as much of a minimalist as makes sense. I like simplifying my life and capsule buying in every area of life. We only need enough, not more than enough!

Spring Fashion 2022: Cut Out Middles And Matchy-Matchy

Photo: Yahoo News

Although I don't go out of my way to dress trendy nowadays, I still follow what's new and in vogue and if I happen to have a piece in my closet which becomes a fad, I'll make an effort to wear it. You?

Two of several styles fashion editors tell us will become big this spring are (1) outfits consisting of 2 pieces exposing a bare midriff or waist; and (2) matchy-matchy outfits. Now I've always been somewhat of a matchy-matchy dresser stopping short of buying shoes and purses cut out of the exact same pattern as my dress. In the 1960s women often bought shoes and handbags that matched 100% in the exact leather and color; or fabric, texture, and pattern as one another ... so everything old becomes new again!

I think I could pull off a matchy-matchy top, trousers and blazer in the same solid color, it's when you wear patterns you must be careful not to overdo it. It can look juvenile. I also don't mind a little peek of a waist as it's not too revealing, especially in a warm climate.

Corso Como Del Pump For Comfort

High heels, in a neutral color, are a wardrobe essential. There are occasions when a woman can't get around wearing them. (For a man the equivalent is probably a necktie.) Often I travel in flats, then change into heels after I arrive at a fancy shindig, but that may be a thing of the past.

Fashion editors are raving about the Corso Como Del Pump. According to PEOPLE's StyleWatch, they are the "most comfortable high heels on the planet." With a 3-inch heel, that's pretty impressive. The shoes have a stylish leather (or patent leather) upper and a leather lining and sole. Built-in padding cushions your foot, and the shoes, reportedly, provide some arch support. Moreover, they look expensive, but cost just under $100.
Customers praise them, giving them 5 star reviews on Amazon. When there are many reviews, I usually trust the consensus. The glowing customer feedback is tempting me to buy a pair in black. What do your think?

Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale

Photo: Seattle Times of the Nordstrom flagship store on West 57th Steet in Manhattan
Every year Nordstrom holds it's big blowout anniversary sale offering deep discounts throughout the store. This year mark your calendar for Wednesday, August 19 - Sunday, August 30, 2020. You can preview the merchandise, which includes apparel, shoes and accessories, beauty exclusives, home goods and children's essentials here. The savings are substantial! Think Black Friday sales in the summer.

Year after year the following 4 items are popular with beauty mavens and fashionistas who will try to score them again:

1) Diptyque Set of 5 Travel Size Candles - Each year the set sales out lickety-split fast. Containing 5 of the brand's most popular scents, they are not full-sized, yet bigger than sample size and $25 off of the usual price. Online the Diptyque candles will sell out within minutes, so you have to be sitting at your computer ready to click at midnight on August 19th.
2) Designer and/or popular brands of clothing and shoes - Be sure to make a list of any articles of clothing or shoes you'll need for the fall or next summer, then check the preview link to see if your favorite brands are included in the promotion as they likely are. These classic, adorable Marc Fisher slingback pumps come in a few colors and textures and will be marked down at 41% off while supplies last. Tory Birch, Tahari, Ted Baker London, Theory (designers); as well as Madewell, Topshop, Maggy London, Vince Camuto (popular) are 8 brands to watch for discounts.

3) Activewear, underwear and spandex - This is the sale to stock up on names you desire without having to pay full-price. Noteworthy discounts on coveted lines include: Zella, Patagonia, Natori, SPANX® and Sweaty Betty.

4) NARS, Dior, Bobby Brown or Charlotte Tibury - It's also the time to consider splurging on any of the overpriced makeup brands (and skincare) that you love and hanker to try. They won't be cheap, but you can score on exclusive beauty offers or special sets created especially for Nordstrom. So you'll get more for your money if you buy them during the anniversary sale.
THE SAVVY SHOPPER'S friend, Angie Smith, said I must write a blog on Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale. Is there anything else to know ... tips or goods to add to the list of great deals, Ang?💋💄🤫👗

Readers, what do you hope to find for less at Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale?

Macy's Herald Square We Love You As You Are

A few days ago after news about Macy's department store hit the press I wrote a post on Facebook that is getting "likes." I'll share the sentiments expressed while keeping the names of FB friends private ...

Debra Turner - What's on your mind:

February 28 at 1:52 PM

Macy's has always been my absolute favorite NYC department store. Today it sounds like it is changing its business model to be more like Saks, Bloomingdales, and Bergdorf Goodman's. Along with closing some of its stores, it announced it would be changing its facade, as well as, "focusing more on luxuries." The very thing I love about Macy's is when you need something such as clothes, shoes, accessories, or household items, Macy's has good quality at every price point from budget-friendly to luxury! For decades Macy's has been for everybody! I hate to see changes that are not improvements. Somebody is not paying attention to what happened with the transformation of Barney's from its downtown location to its uptown store. In 2 decades I fear, Macy's may suffer the same fate ... and it will no longer be fun to shop there! How many overpriced dresses, bags, shoes, bed sheets, or towels does a person need?

D P
Totally agree with you
M M
I am hoping that that will not happen with the New York store, but I'm not holding my breath. I mourned the demise of Lord and Taylor. They are an online store now but their prices are like Saks or Bloomingdale's.
I haven't been able to afford one thing on their website 😕
Debra Turner
M M Sadly all these great old department stores are gone. B. Altman, Gimbles too. 🙁
M M
Debra Turner I loved B. Altman. And putting myself through school I worked at another upscale store called Arnold Constable. It was on a diagonal from Lord & Taylor and is now a branch of the public library.
Debra Turner
M M I remember it well. The B. Altman store closed soon after I arrived in Manhattan, but not before I bought a wool blazer and 2 cardigans there. You walked in and a sales associate with a name like Mary Catherine in her late 50s or early 60s helped you find what you needed and really knew her specialty. Likewise in my hometown, we had 4 amazing department stores, at one time called ''dry goods" stores with the same helpful sales associates. In the early 90s, my senior mother had to go to a periodontist whose office was in downtown Louisville, to save her teeth (happens as a senior, your teeth have decades of wear and tear), and her periodontist said, Mrs. Turner, you will be my last patient. I'm retiring, because as all these department stores have closed, I'm not getting any more patients who get pay + medical and dental benefits. The newer companies replacing the department stores aren't paying employees benefits.
M M
Debra Turner Wow! That's why unions are so important.
There is a wonderful novel that I read several years ago that takes place at B Altman. Lucia, Lucia
by Adriana Trigiani.
It tells the story of a young girl from an Italian family, who lives in Greenwich Village. It takes place in the 1950s and she uses her sewing skills to get a job at the store. The author has written the book with such detail that you can remember what it was like to be in that store. Plus, the plotline itself is really interesting. You might be able to get it at a public library.
Debra Turner
M M Thanks, I'll look for it.
C S
The department stores from long ago are disappearing. I will always love Macy’s. Their Hotel Collection bedding remains my favorite but it seems the quality of merchandise across the board is declining. Also, dislike racks stuffed with cheap garments in poor layouts. My local Macy’s is woefully understaffed. Last weekend I tried to buy a Radleys of London purse and left the store empty-handed. Could not find one salesperson anywhere. Very discouraging.
Debra Turner
C S Even in NYC at Herald's Square it is difficult to find a helpful sales associate. They are trained to be more helpful at Bloomingdale's, but the price points of the merchandise start higher. Macy's -- all price points. You could find things for what you'd pay at Bloomingdales, but you didn't have to ... sometimes due to their hard-to-believe sales.

C W We had a Lord & Taylor near us which carried all the brands and items I liked for many years. Then they decided to become more fashion-forward, dropped a lot of the old brands of shoes, jewelry, clothing, etc., and eventually went out of business. Study your customer base, department stores!
C W
Also, what you describe may explain what happened to the Macy's in White Plains, which appeared to be emptying out the store the last time I was there. (It has since closed, and I can't believe the one in Yonkers will support the new business plan you describe!)

Debra Turner
C W yes, I'm terrified for Macy's!

Now we wait to see what the new business plan will mean for the Macy's we already know and love. I'm sharing our remarks in the hopes that decision-makers stumble upon the blog and preserve what customers love about Macy's.

Do you have any thoughts or memories of old-style department stores?
