American Potato Salad

Photo: iStock

In an earlier blog, I shared my recipe for German Potato Salad which my mother made often in our house. But she also learned how to make American Potato Salad. With the addition of eggs, it can serve as a quick yet satisfying one-dish meal for one person, or as a side dish for many people at a barbecue. In other words, you can make a little or a lot!

Over time I learned why I like homemade American potato salad better than almost any prepared by a deli. I like my American potato salad creamy yet dry and dense, as opposed to runny; and I don't like any trace of sweetness, usually the result of pickle radish as an ingredient in deli potato salad. Here's my simple and relatively healthy recipe for one serving, which I ate as dinner yesterday:

My American Potato Salad

Ingredients:

2 medium-sized potatoes, microwaved tender (use the starchy variety: Idaho, Russet, Golden, etc)
2 large eggs
1/2 medium onion, finely chopped
1-2  stalks of celery, finely chopped (eyeball the amount)
2 tablespoons low-fat mayonnaise
1 tablespoon Dion mustard
A good sprinkle of Zatarain's Creole Seasoning
1 teaspoon of dried garlic powder
A few turns of the peppermill

Optional: Plain Greek yogurt

Directions:

1) Microwave the potatoes unpeeled until tender, about 8 minutes.

2) Boil your eggs on a stovetop until hard, about 5 minutes. When done, drop the potatoes and eggs into a bowl and chop. I don't peel the potatoes, but you can.

3) Add the finely chopped onion and celery to the bowl and mix.

4) Follow with the mayonnaise and Dion mustard. At this stage don't worry if it's too dry just work to incorporate all the ingredients.

5) Toss in the spices. I eyeball it, then adjust the spice to taste as the final step.

6) If my potato salad needs more creamy ingredients, I use a dub of Greek yogurt before adding additional mayonnaise. If it still tastes like mayonnaise, I leave it alone. If the Greek yogurt makes the potato salad too bland I add another spoonful of mayonnaise to the bowl.  Also now taste to adjust your spices.

That's it! I ate my one-dish dinner warm. When I make a bigger batch, into the refrigerator it goes until serving.

If you have bell peppers, green onions, scallions, or olives, feel free to toss them into your potato salad. I prefer keeping the ingredients simple but will toss in leftover vegetables to get rid of them. (Did you know olives although savory are technically a fruit?) Nonetheless, making potato salad more complicated isn't necessarily tastier. Fewer ingredients are just as delicious! An easy, peasy, breezy preparation. Enjoy!

Mad Hippie Skincare and Cosmetics

cheek and lip tint - a favorite!

Mad Hippie's skincare, sunscreen, and makeup, which are available at Walmart, Ulta, iHerb, and Amazon, have top-notch ingredients. I wasn't as familiar with the retailer's motto but it's fabulous too: "From helping inspire
people to make healthier choices, to raising awareness and support for the environment, Mad Hippie is committed to a brighter, better tomorrow."

Now let's discuss what the beauty brand's products offer consumers. Its skincare is transparent, clean, and lightweight and its makeup is natural and vegan with colors to create flattering, healthy, and polished looks. There are no parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, dyes, petrochemicals, PEGs, or SLS in its beauty products.

Using the term organic is expensive for small business brands to go through the process to acquire the term for their products. Some small companies sell organic products but can't use the term. Instead, they use the word natural to describe their products. However, there is no definition, and the standard of what constitutes natural hasn't been established. So here on the blog, I tend to say clean by looking at the ingredient list and also seeing what's not in a formula.

The beauty editors at Marie Claire call Mad Hippie's skincare and cosmetics magic while THE SAVVY SHOPPER loves its value for quality price points! Mad Hippie is a brand that proves you don't have to empty your wallet to buy high-end skincare or makeup! Business models determine costs not the quality of products. Why not support your friends (who love you!) and avoid retailers who gouge (but don't love you back)!

Judging by what Mad Hippie puts in its beauty remedies coupled with what it charges its customers, this beauty line is one of our friends! Check them out.

Demarson For Edgy Fashion Jewelry

Demarson New York has been featured in Vogue, WWD, Harper's Bazaar, NBC's Today Show, and now finally on THE SAVVY SHOPPER. As the song goes, How lucky can you get?😁 Of course, launching a blooming jewelry line is the result of having a vision and experience in the industry combined with hours of hard work and a good publicist.

The retailer's founders, Jason Crantz and Marcela Ponce, design modern, bold, edgy pieces that look beautifully crafted. I love the aesthetics and sophistication of the pieces, yet I caution all savvy shoppers against buying a collection of fashion jewelry. If a piece speaks to you and you know you'll get lots of wear and compliments out of it, go ahead and treat yourself. Some of the jewelry I've posted gracing the post you'll find discounted under the website's Sale Archive Tab.

Still, in lieu of collecting fashion jewelry, it's smarter to save up for fine jewelry, 14k or 18k gold, set with your favorite precious gemstones: diamonds, emeralds, rubies, or sapphires.

Although more expensive, all you really need are a few pieces of fine jewelry that you'll wear time and again over decades. For jewelry lovers, it's worth saving up to buy.

Fashion jewelry is usually less expensive than fine jewelry and yet not dirt cheap. With fashion jewelry, you pay for the design but don't get real gold or real gemstones. However, there may be places where wearing fine jewelry would make you a target, making the adornment of fashion jewelry safer.

At times 925 sterling silver jewelry -- also a precious metal and sold as fine jewelry -- is cheaper than fashion jewelry and is by far more affordable than gold. That said ...

Demarson's popularity with fashion editors is understandable. Its cutting-edge earrings, rings, bracelets, and necklaces are eye-catching. The brand stands out. Upscale stores like Nieman Marcus and Nordstrom carry the line.

Creamy Pumpkin Soup

Photo: Cooking Classy

Pumpkin, pumpkin everywhere! In recent times fall is marked by the proliferation of pumpkin-flavored coffee, candy, and desserts. This weekend I'm jumping on the pumpkin bandwagon by making pumpkin soup. Savory and simple, I don't like mixing sweet and savory flavors in a dish, so no cinnamon or ginger in my soup. Here's the recipe:

Creamy Pumpkin Soup

Ingredients:

5 cups water
2 large chicken bouillon cubes
1 15-ounce can of pumpkin puree
1 medium onion, diced
2 stalks of celery with leaves, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
½ teaspoon dried or fresh thyme
12 turns of the peppermill (= 1/2 teaspoon)
A tiny sprinkle of red pepper flakes for a hint of heat, but short of hot.
1 teaspoon of dried (or fresh) parsley
A sprinkle of Westchester sauce
1 bay leaf
cup of milk or 1/2 cup of cream

Note: No additional salt is needed unless you use chicken stock in lieu of water and bouillon to make the soup. If you substitute chicken stock then add 1/2 teaspoon of salt. You have the option of mincing a potato to thicken the soup. A potato adds B vitamins and potassium to the soup. The soup is good with or without the potato. I don't go out of my way to avoid eating starch since starches are satisfying and part of a balanced meal. That said, I also don't go crazy but focus on moderation ... portion size. I know, my lovely readers, don't we all wish we could eat with abandon?

Directions:

1) Toss the pumpkin puree and water into a blender, or food processor (or use a mixer, emersion blender, or potato masher in the pot itself) to incorporate them. Pour into a saucepan with chicken bouillon and bring to a simmer.

2) Add diced onion, celery, thyme, garlic, pepper, red pepper flakes, and/or a potato (if using) and parsley to the pot.

3) Simmer on medium-low heat until the onion and celery are tender - about 15 - 20 minutes.

4) Whisk in the milk or cream. If you don't mind the calories, the cream is richer and better, but milk is healthier -- so you choose.

5) Bring to a boil again and simmer until thick and creamy.

6) Taste and adjust the spice (sometimes you need a tad more salt or pepper. You can add more cream to make it creamier and if so heat the soup again), then transfer to a bowl and garnish with another sprinkle of dried parsley.

Slice fresh crusty bread to eat with your soup, and feel free to
toss bacon bits, croutons, or whatever you like ... toasted seeds and nuts ... on top of your bowl of soup.

You could make ham and cheddar or turkey and brie sandwiches with a lettuce, tomato, and cucumber vinegarette salad for a weekend meal. Open a bottle of wine. Bon Appetite!

Any kind of we-a-ther, soup and sandwitch go to-ge-ther."

Diamond Prices Are Crashing

As much as I love jewelry I've always known the price of gemstones is arbitrary to a great extent. Jewelry is as much of an overpriced luxury item as Hermes handbags, Manolo Blahnik shoes, or Dior pants and coats. They cost what consumers are willing to pay for them. Never think of luxury items as investments but to be enjoyed as things of beauty only. The value of luxury goods is driven by want not need. If you covet investments, take your money to an investment firm to buy stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, where you'll earn returns on your portfolio. You're lucky to break even by reselling luxury goods after you subtract a 15% - 20% commission.

Photo: That Guy Osiris - I'll take them!
So I'm happy to report an exciting development in the diamond market! In 2023 diamond prices are tumbling down -- about 23% for 1-carat stones and about 15% for 3-carat stones -- according to experts who watch diamond prices such as That Guy Osiris, an ex-diamond trader who has a YouTube channel.

The reasons for the decline in diamond prices are several:

(1) Monopoly diamond sellers such as DeBeer aren't as powerful as they once were in setting diamond prices high combined with limiting the supply of gemstones on the market.

Photo: istock
(2) Nowadays the demand for diamonds is less. Not every bride in 2023 desires an engagement ring. Some wish to put their $7,000 - $15,000 earnings elsewhere such as for a downpayment on a house or car. Millennials are more interested in spending on travel and experiences than buying diamond rings.

(3) A main reason why the price of diamonds is sinking is the greater acceptance by the public of lab-grown diamonds which cost about 1/3 less than diamonds mined in nature. Diamonds created in a lab are chemically and optically identical to natural diamonds.

(4) The process of making laboratory diamonds is getting better and cheaper all the time, and more companies including jeweler James Allan are offering them. According to Liberum Capital Markets, about 25% to 35% of diamonds sold to customers today are lab-grown diamonds.

Photo: That Guy Osiris
5) That Guy Osiris says that industry leader DeBeers is responding by discounting its prices for 2 - 4 carat rough natural diamonds. Recently prices for uncut natural diamonds have dropped from $1,400 a carat to $850 per carat to be competitive with lab-grown diamonds.

All of this is a win, win, win for customers! If diamond prices keep falling, one day I'll be able to afford my fantasy 4-carat stud diamond earrings (that's 2-carats each ear, sister!!), my 20-carat diamond blingy tennis bracelet, and my 5-carat diamond solitaire ring ... no engagement needed!

Diamonds By Bonnie - has an Instagram and a YouTube Channel
I don't care one iota about the lesser monetary value of lab or natural stones as long as I'm not charged for it. Just give this glitter-loving girl her diamonds! I'll start with that big brilliant round diamond at the top of the blog and the pear-shaped diamond ring at the bottom! We
can add my fantasy diamonds to my collection later.😉😂

If in the future diamonds cost less, would you value them less?

Cetaphil Launches Purified Peptides Anti-aging Skincare For Sensitive Skin

If you're a skincare enthusiast you know retin-A and its over-the-counter derivative retinol is the gold standard of anti-aging skincare. We hear it over and over. But they can be brutal on virgin or sensitive skin, leaving it red and raw. What gives this most medically studied anti-aging ingredient its effectiveness is how often you apply it to your face over how strong the dose is. The reason non-prescription retinol is more beneficial to virgin skin than jumping to prescription strength Retin-A is mainly because if you don't slowly build up a tolerance for the prescription strength, you'll have to stop using it after your skin quickly becomes red and raw.

Nowadays science has tested and also given its seal of approval to other less harsh products better tolerated by sensitive and virgin skin which can give you similar anti-aging benefits like retinol and retin-A, such as softening fine lines and wrinkles and stimulating the production of collagen. We're talking about immediate anti-aging improvements without the side effects of peeling and pain! {Bakuckiol is one such retinol alternative milder for sensitive skin. I've covered it in a prior blog.}

Cetaphil is launching new anti-aging skincare for all skin types including sensitive skin. The new line goes by the name Cetaphil Healthy Renew which aims to improve skin's firmness, texture, and tone, 3 benefits you also get by using retinols. The Cetaphil new product line is great for treating dry skin too. It keeps the skin barrier balanced with up to 24 hours of hydration.

The 4 beauty anti-aging elixirs in the launch are (1) a face serum, (2) an eye cream, (3) a day cream (with sunscreen), and (4) a night cream.

The key ingredients in the new products are anti-aging peptides (the brand calls them purified peptides, obviously, a marketing term😊) to help minimize fine lines and wrinkles; vitamins B3 (niacinamide) and B5 (panthenol) to hydrate, soothe, and repair the skin barrier; plus Rice Lees and Edelweiss (botanicals) to target dullness and uneven skin tone.

Cetaphil is developed by dermatologists and sold at drugstores. Universally, skin doctors do recognize the role of peptides in fighting some of the signs of aging. They endorse using peptides to erase fine lines and wrinkles as not a waste of money.

Note that you can improve your skin, taking years off your appearance, simply by hydrating and nourishing your skin barrier ... so moisturize your face with a good brand like Cetaphil (or CeraVe, both) available at drugstores! What's more, getting rid of old dead skin cells with botanicals like Rice Lees and Edelweiss encourages new skin cells to rise to the surface. Your skin will be more supple, elastic, and radiant in about 2 weeks. BTW, Retin-A takes about a year before you can tolerate using it every night.

The more brand and ingredient choices the better! For sensitive skin, I'll also link several blogs that detail other science-based, anti-aging ingredients below.👇

Canada's Nanaimo Bars

Oh, Canada, why have you been holding out on me?
These classic Canadian cookie bars popped up on my Facebook feed. They are named after Nanaimo, British Columbia, but I've never heard of them. They look so delicious I've decided to make them! After googling the recipe to find that other recipes call for custard powder, another food item I've never heard of and won't find in my supermarket, I decided to go with this 12 Tomatoes recipe adapted from Classic Cooking. I like the white chocolate flavor in the custard layer. Another version of Nanaimo bars suggests making a coffee-flavored custard, also tasty! You choose. I'll go with white chocolate the 1st time.

Nanaimo Bars - 12 Tomatoes version:

Ingredients:
Photo: 12 Tomatoes - FB

Bottom Layer --
1 stick unsalted butter, cubed
⅓ cup brown sugar
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups graham crackers, finely crushed
8 oz sweetened coconut, shredded
1 teaspoon kosher salt
½ cup chopped nuts (walnuts, pecans, or almonds)

Pudding Filling --
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
¼ cup heavy cream
2 tablespoons white chocolate instant pudding mix
2 cups powdered sugar

Photo: 12 Tomatoes
Chocolate Topping --
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips - See my tweak - step 6.
4 tablespoons salted butter
Optional: ½ teaspoon kosher salt

Directions: (From 12 Tomatoes with my tweaks in blue font).

1) Line an 8x8-inch baking dish with parchment paper. Set aside. (It works in a buttered 9x9-inch baking pan equally well. I think the crust is better without parchment paper.)

2) Melt 1 stick of cubed butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add cocoa powder, salt, and brown sugar, remove the pan from heat, and whisk until mixture is well-blended.

3) Slowly whisk in the beaten egg and mix constantly until the egg is incorporated. Return the pot to the stovetop over medium heat and cook until the chocolate mixture has thickened, stirring frequently, for up to 2 minutes.

4) Stir in vanilla extract, shredded coconut, chopped nuts, and graham cracker crumbs. Once blended, pour the chocolate mixture into the prepared baking dish. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 40 minutes.

5) Beat 5 tablespoons unsalted butter with heavy cream, and instant pudding powder until smooth. Stir in powdered sugar until a creamy mixture comes together. Spread the cream filling over the top of the chocolate base layer and recover with plastic wrap. Return the pan to the refrigerator for 20 minutes.

Photo: BBC
6) Melt chocolate chips with butter in a microwave-safe bowl, cooking in short increments of time and stirring until melted and smooth. Add salt, if using, and stir until blended. (See my tweak below👇). Spread chocolate topping over top of the cream filling. Cover with plastic wrap and return to the refrigerator to chill for 30 minutes or until the chocolate has completely set. My chocolate ganache is pure and simple without sacrificing flavor: Melt chocolate chips or broken dark chocolate pieces in a microwave-safe bowl with a tiny amount of any fat milk. Remember you can always add more milk, but can't remove it, so start with less. You don't need the butter or salt to make chocolate ganache. After melting, stir well and pour the ganache over the 2nd layer. Cover and refrigerate.

7) To serve, cut into squares. Store in an airtight container. If stacking your Nanaimo bars, place a layer of parchment paper in between each layer. Don't stack the cut bars as thy're moist because of the middle layer of pudding. It won't end well!

Makes 16 bars. Refrigerate any leftovers and return the next day to eat the batch up! Let's not lie and pretend otherwise.

Stylish Sporty Fall Finds

No doubt about it, fall has arrived in the Western Hemisphere. With a change of seasons, perhaps you need to add a few new casual pieces to your fall wardrobe? Old Navy is located a couple of blocks from where I live, so it's impossible not to float into the store often when passing. I continue to be amazed by the quality of the retailer's leggings at ultra-affordable price points making them a steal!

The merchant tends to tweak their offerings from year to year so when you find a style you like and they go on sale, it's a good idea to buy a few pairs. You may prefer mostly cotton fabric but next year find mostly polyester or modal as choices. The waistband may change or the flare could be discontinued.

To the left are all the selections of leggings this fall, which consist of different styles, textures (meaning weaves and fabrics), and lengths.

Although 8 offerings require studying each one, a good selection is great for different body types or activities. Two Old Navy leggings I love right now include:

1) High-Waisted Ankle Leggings For Women - Although I prefer jet black, there are other colors too. They sit just below the belly button and are 96% cotton and 4% spandex. Super soft and smooth for comfort, and opaque. Lightweight yet not see-through, I highly recommend them for fall and early winter. They are warm, but not too warm for the sometimes 75-degree F days of autumn. They are fitted through the hips and waist and narrow at the ankles. At times I wear these smooth and lightweight leggings with black ankle socks under a dress in winter instead of tights for warmth with comfort, and nobody is the wiser!

2) Extra High-Waisted PowerChill Leggings For Women - They sit slightly above the belly button and contain 53% cotton, 22% polyester, 13% modal, and 12% spandex. These are light and airy, but also a tad heavier than my 1st recommendation above. Great for Pilates, yoga, or a workout. They are fitted at the hips and thighs and narrow at the ankles. The fabric offers 4-way strength with stay-dry, sweat-wicking technology. They also have an elastic waist that has an inside pocket. Unlike pair #1, they'll be warm enough to take you through the winter months and in the jet-black hue can be dressed up with ballet flats and a blazer. They also come in shorter 7/8 lengths.

3) Dr. Scholl's Women's Time Off Platform Sneakers - I'm recommending these with caveats. Not only are they cute and feminine with leggings, jeans, and dresses, but the platforms provide a measure of arch support and stable heels. Customers love how comfortable they are for walking. For sneakers they are also well priced, but here's the rub ... customers report if you wear them a lot for walking, they won't last longer than 6 months to a year. The shoes' material tends to separate from the rubber, so don't pay the full retail price but wait for a generous sale. I'd buy the Time Off Platforms on sale for $40, but not at $69 or $100. Even at the lower price, I'd be disappointed if they didn't last. To be competitive, Dr. Scholl needs to resolve this manufacturing weakness to make these stylish and supportive sneakers as durable as Nikes and Converse! Sneakers are made for walking … but sometimes a cute style we know to baby is tempting, no?

So there you are, 3 sporty styles to take you through the fall while leaving you with a few dollars to put in your leggings' hidden pocket.

The Manet and Degas Exhibition Opens At the Met

Left: The Plum - Edouard Manet; Right: In a Cafe (The Absinthe Drinker) - Edgar Degas

A compelling art exhibit opens at the Metropolitan Museum of Art running from September 24, 2023 - January 7, 2024. The show brings together 2 huge French impressionist artists who in life were friends, rivals, and sometimes foes: Èdouard Manet (1832 - 1883) and Edgar Degas (1834 - 1917) were nearly the same age.

Racehorses Before the Stands - Edgar Degas

The Races at Longchamp - Edouard Manet

While the Met always has works of these two contemporaries on view from its own collection, this exhibition gathers 160 of their paintings and works on paper, including masterpieces from around the world, to show the two colossi fathers of modern French painters, side by side, illustrating how their careers crossed and diverged.

Olumpia - Edouard Manet

If you find yourself in Manhattan, be sure to visit the Manet/Degas exhibit. Seeing 160 pieces from 150 institutions and private collectors all in one place is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity not to be missed!

Edouard Manet & his wife, Suzanne playing the piano - painted by Edgar Degas as a gift,  Manet hated the painting and caused a rift with his friend by slashing it.

I've not gone myself yet, but will soon! Meanwhile, here's a write-up with more of the beautiful exhibition paintings in The New York Times. When I see it, I'll surely spot favorites!

Years ago as a Congressional intern (in the US Senate), I fell in love with an Edouard Manet painting hanging in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and frequently went to look at it. Right before I left town, I bought the poster, had it framed in New York, and it has been hanging in my living room ever since. I never get tired of looking at it. Click here for a peek. I love Manet's realism and harsh contrasts of light and shadows and Degas' brightness, lightness, and shimmer of color.

Do you have a favorite?
