Maybelline Nudes of New York Eyeshadow Palette

With the need to wear face masks many of us aren't thinking of makeup as we do in normal times, but I notice women are still wearing eye shadow and it's an excellent practice to look pulled together on Zoom calls. Looking your casual best helps to lift your mood as it's an area you can control! As usual, Maybelline makes it easier with top-notch shadow for less!

Maybelline launched yet another gorgeous nude palette in early 2020. Its Nudes of New York Eyeshadow Palette contains 16 creamy mix and match shades that are universally flattering on every skin tone: light, medium or dark. Luscious and rich pigments, rivaling top brands Urban Decay and Too Face, glide on smooth to last all day long. The palette makes a fabulous splurge or no-fail, holiday gift that won't break the bank! From fresh pale pink for a rosy natural gaze to subtle shimmer and browns to create a killer smoky eye, there's not a wasted dud color in the bunch!

Golly, despite having Maybelline's other nude or "mini city" palettes, these are such pretty shades, the Nudes of New York Eyeshadow Palette is a must-buy from the beauty brand! For the price, you can buy 2 and keep 1 palette for yourself! Available at Ulta, Walmart, Target and local drugstores for $11.99 - $13.99, depending on the retailer.

Olay's Because Of You Gift Set

Sometimes beauty companies offer their skin care lines at a "special price" in the form of a beauty gift set. At times it's a bargain for a brand you long to try. The Olay "Because of You" Gift Set retails for $159. Olay is offering 5 products for $98.99 here. As a Savvy Shopper looking for the best deal, should you buy it?

Surprisingly my answer is no, or probably not ... unless you simply want a lovely gift set to make someone you know happy who would benefit from the introduction to good skincare. And ... you don't wish to put a gift set together yourself. However, for value you can get the Olay beauty items for lower price points at Walmart, Target and drugstores (which tend to sell them for less ... before adding their own promotions). Always compare prices to make sure you aren't paying more for beauty products on a retailer's own website. Too often Olay's skincare lotions, creams and treatments are higher when purchased directly on the Olay website.

A 2nd reason not to buy Olay's Because Of You Gift Set is: You are paying for multiple products you may not want or use. So always examine what's in a retailer's collection: In the above gift set, there are 2 face creams, but do you need both? Probably not as they do much the same things -- moisturize the skin on your face -- with one of them targeted to fight aging. So if you happen to be younger and wrinkle-free, you should buy the red jar (Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream, Fragrance-Free1.7 oz); and as you age you can switch to the purple formula (Retinol 24 Night Moisturizer, 1.7 oz) to help treat those developing lines and wrinkles.🙁←me.

What's more, many people can use one cream for their face and under their eyes. Therefore only if your under-eye skin is sensitive, do you need to spend another $25 for a separate eye cream.

The other 2 products in the kit are bonuses. The Olay Shine Control Sun SPF 35, 1.3 oz offers excellent sun protection to prevent aging, but I would think about buying it solo on sale to try it; and the Overnight Brightening Gel Mask, 1.7 oz is great for pampering and brightening the skin if you, in fact, need it.

So the verdict is: The set contains top-notch skincare; nonetheless you get a better deal by buying only the products you need elsewhere for less than $100. While you're not being ripped off, the 5  jars of products (at $20 each) are not much of a reduction. The set is not a steal!

Sorry Olay ... know that I still love you!

L'Orèal Night Cream

L'Orèal's anti-aging night cream(s) have top-notch anti-aging ingredients. A sibling of luxury brand, Lancome Paris, the retailer formulates effective lotions and potions with proven ingredients bar none, yet customers won't go broke using them as they are available at drugstores, at times selling for $10-$12 a jar.

A gripe I have about L'Orèal's beauty line is the same one I have about Lancome, namely some of the creams have fragrance, and I don't understand why the company puts perfume in a product that goes on a face. It is unneeded, usually unwanted, and drying to people with sensitive skin. Why create problems for your stellar brand? Nonetheless, the facial treatments are excellent moisturizers containing key anti-aging ingredients that work.

1) Age Perfect Cell Renewal - is the newest night cream and it is fragrance-free. There is no artificial color either. The pink tone of the cooling night moisturizer comes from peony petals. To treat a dull complexion, it contains lipohydroxy acid to exfoliate surface skin cells for quicker cell turnover to bring millions of new skin cells to the surface. I got a free sample from the drugstore to try. The night cream moisturizes without greasiness and feels lovely. And believe it peeps, I woke up even more beautiful this morning!😉

2) RevitaLift Triple Power Anti-Aging Overnight Mask and
3) RevitaLift Triple Power Angi-Aging [Fragrance-Free] Moisturizer - #2 is an overnight mask, but there is no fragrance-free option on the market. Naturally some customers dislike the smell of the perfume but love the effectiveness of the cream. If not for the perfume I would highly recommend it. #3 is a lighter fragrance-free formula containing the 3 top proven anti-aging ingredients both jars contain: pro-retinol (a stabilized retinol derivative), vitamin C and hyaluronic acid to soften wrinkles, as well as, firm and brighten skin. Both creams are paraben-free, mineral oil-free and dye-free ... yet only one, #2 (the lighter moisturizer) is fragrance-free. Oh why L'Orèal, why?

This year I'm even more determined to find beauty products which rivel expensive luxe brands for less. Join me, if you wish! If nothing else, 2020 is a great lesson to be mindful in life.
Truth! Another thing that makes a person more beautiful is having a beautiful character and spirit. Remember and strive my lovelies!💋

Waste Not Want Not Native American Style

According to editor, Todd Marks, who works for Consumer Reports, we waste 25% of all the products we buy because we can't get them out of their containers.  He says the pumps for personal care items like body lotions and face serums are so poorly designed, you end up throwing away about a week's supply of product -- the stuff that gets stuck at the bottom and won't come out.  I think it's more like two weeks worth– because oh, how I hate when a favorite cosmetic or conditioner is discontinued.  So much so that I'm not above splitting open the container with a utility knife to get to every last drop before it disappears forever!  The first time I was forced to do this I was amazed at how much product was left.  Lipsticks will last many extra months if applied with a lip brush.

When using every last drop, though, be prudent.  Some cosmetics like mascara have a short shelf life.  Mascara should only be kept for 6 months.  Then you have to worry about germs and ineffectiveness.  Safety should always outweigh attempts to save money.  Nonetheless, many other personal care items, like shampoos, conditioners and moisturizers, last a long time.  Using an entire container of these products, including what is normally wasted, will add up to big bucks.

Consumer Reports magazine's Todd Marks also suggests that we pour apple cider vinegar in bottles of ketchup and barbeque sauce and use the last bits in cooking.  I admit, I don't go that far unless I'm short of the ingredient while right in the middle of trying to prepare a dish.  Even if you choose not to get this extreme, it's not a bad idea to be a little more mindful of waste ... and conserve where you can, a value held by earlier generations, including American Indians who killed one buffalo as needed, then used every part of the animal -- meat, bones, horns and hide -- for a practical purpose.  Nothing went to waste, partly out of respect for the slaughtered animal.

Another idea the editor supports, I do practice:  Freezing very ripe fruit and using it in recipes.  Not only do I stock nutritious strawberries, blueberries and peaches that, otherwise, would  go bad (they make delicious smoothies); I also cut up vegetables like celery, red and green peppers, as well as, meats such as lean roast beef and chicken, then pull them out of the freezer at a later date for quick meals.  The frozen meats and vegetables make tasty soups and stews with a minimum of effort.  Plus, families tend to eat better with a little thought and planning.  Below are links to a couple of earlier posts for quick and easy recipes.  Enjoy!

NARS Orgasm Dupes

Photo: Sephora
Recently I featured the iconic NARS Orgasm Collection, a peachy pink with gold shimmer shade. It's fresh and polished with the ability to make every skin tone glow. Looks especially lovely worn in the spring and summer. But NARS is an expensive brand, and sometimes we resist spending $60 bucks to buy it! So here are the very best matches, dare I say Fake NARS Orgasms, um ...  knockoffs, dead ringers ... dupes for less:
Photo: Temptalia
For NARS Orgasm Blush:

The Doppelgänger is: Milani in Dolce Pink.🎀

Best runner-ups include:
  • Sleek in Rose Gold (Slightly more gold then NARS, yet it is an absolute favorite of makeup enthusiasts everywhere.)
  • Revlon in Tickled Pink (The shimmer finish has the gold illuminaton.)
  • Milani in Luminoso #05 (a tad duller in color than Dolce Pink. Build this one.)
  • Makeup Geek in Romance - rich color (One swat.)
  • the Balm in Hot Mama! - rich color (One swat.)

For NARS Orgasm After Glow Lip Gloss:

The Doppelgänger is: Burt's Bees Lip Gloss in Sunny Day.🎀

Best runners-up include:

  • Revlon ColorBurst Lip Gloss in Peony
  • Milani Amore Shine Liquid Lip Color in Delight #01
  • Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Beige Rose #602 (It has a satin finish. The shade is hard to find now. I included it since it is such a close match, has rich color with staying power and, indeed, feels sensational! Check Ebay and Amazon periodically for it.
  • L'Oreal in Peachy Fuzz #417 (Less of a Doppelgänger then the others. The most peachy of the peachy-pink choices. But! It is a gorgeous color with pretty gold shimmer. Unique, natural and understated. Rich, moist formula too. Maybelline and L'Oreal give you the exact same high quality lipstick for under $7. Try each brand, and fell in love!
Honorable mention: The best NARS Orgasm Doppelgänger in a lip balm is: Eos Lip Balm in Coral Shimmer. Smooths your lips with a pop of Orgasm-like color.

All of the above NARS Orgasm Dupes are dirt cheap at Ulta, CVS, Walmart, Target, Walgreens, Bed, Bath and Beyond, as well as, other drugstores. Consider this blog your best color/texture matches Bible of the hue. Keep your money in your pocket and a shade of Orgasm on your face!

What??? I. didn't. name. it.

Naomi Watts' Stripes Hydrating Serum

Photo: Oprah Daily

The talented and beautiful actress Naomi Watts has developed a skin and hair care line of products called Stripes which for now is exclusively sold at Sephora. Her hydrating serum is getting a lot of media buzz and customers with dry skin give it positive reviews for its effectiveness. But at $80 a pop, I'll spotlight 3 worthy alternatives for less moola. I always say it doesn't matter how good a product is if you go broke using it daily.

So let's examine what ingredients are in the Stripes serum to
treat dry skin that also has some anti-aging benefits:

💥Ectoine - protects and moisturizes the skin sometimes it's an ingredient in sunscreen.

💥 Mushroom extract - a skin hydrator, it mimics hyaluronic acid, and the antioxidants in mushrooms (selenium and vitamin C) fight free radicals giving it anti-aging properties.

💥 Hyaluronic acid - reduces the look of fine lines by locking in moisture.

When you are trying to substitute less pricey beauty products for expensive skincare, you may not be able to find the exact ingredient for ingredient matches and yet sometimes you can either come darn close or find products with ingredients that do much the same thing, i.e., give you similar benefits of the ingredients in the expensive product.

Start by asking what is the main function of the expensive serum? In the case of the Stripe serum, it tells us in its name. The primary purpose isn't anti-aging, it's to hydrate the skin. {In fact, the holy grail of an anti-aging serum is retin-A or its non-prescription derivative retinol. Stripe has a retinol serum that also sells for $80. On THE SAVVY SHOPPER you'll find a ton of effective retinol serums for less with a search.}

Excellent Substitutes For Less include:

1) e.l.f. Superhydrate Gel Moisturizer  - is a moisturizing gel with mushroom extract, squalane, vitamins B3 and E, and cica (an herb rich in fatty acids, vitamins, and amino acids that is used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicines). It's the closest match if you're intent on using a cheaper beauty serum with mushroom extract.

If you focus on only Stripe's main function to hydrate the skin other worthy substitutes are:

2) The Ordinary Natural Moisturer Factors + HA - Contains Sodium Hyaluronate, Arginine, Sodium PCA, PCA, Lactates, Lactic Acid, and Minerals. The Ordinary has an entire category of different hydrating serums and I'll name this one product but link you to the entire line so you can compare and contrast what's too numerous to list!

3) CeraVe face moisturizers - Developed by dermatologists and sold in drugstores. Frankly, all the CeraVe formulas for face and body are so mild and moisturizing that in winter I use both to hydrate my face without issues. CeraVe makes facial moisturizers for AM or PM, with the AM formula containing the addition of sunscreen, so you won't have to buy or apply sun protection separately. All contain hyaluronic acid and ceramides (lipids naturally found in the skin) and MEV (multivesicular emulsion) technology, a delivery system to make ingredients more hydrating and lasting. The CVS and Walmart store brands are identical. We are beyond fortunate to have skin doctor-created moisturizers in drugstore aisles!

Creating and marketing a skincare line isn't easy. It takes research, finding backers with deep pockets, and a ton of hard work to get it on the market, so I have nothing but respect for Naomi Watts for achieving it. Nonetheless, not everyone can afford $160 for 2 serums: a hydrator and retinol, the barebones of what you need for daytime and nighttime skincare.

With knowledge of anti-aging ingredients that really work and skincare brands, you can save $130 - $145 per purchase simply by selecting the right substitutions. My gosh ... inadvertently this entire week has become a skincare trilogy as I couldn't stop writing about it!😆 Linked below are the other 2 blogs if you wish to read all 3 blogs = the week of a skincare trilogy.🤣🤣🤣

Where Value And Convenience Converge

I love drugstores. Sometimes I go in to pick up one item like toothpaste or Alka-Seltzer and end up browsing for half an hour. There are just so many useful items in the aisles of a drugstore, including cosmetics, medicine, cleaners, groceries, electronic gadgets and other household necessities. You can find everything from cotton socks, comfortable slippers and beach wear to greeting cards, emergency gifts and lawn chairs. Enter and you have the possibility of one-stop shopping. I especially like the weekly specials drugstore chains run on goods most people need in their daily lives, like breakfast cereals, paper towels and laundry detergents. At my local drugstore, I can buy a gallon of milk and a dozen eggs for less than I pay at the supermarket. What I appreciate too is you get a wide selection of excellent personal care products, at irresistible prices, making it unnecessary to go anywhere else for them. Rarely do I feel ripped off after shopping in a drugstore. Usually I leave satisfied carrying home staples, things I truly need at unbeatable prices. And isn’t that a wonderful feeling?

Here are 10 of my favorites – often offered on sale at "buy one, get one free," – and I hope you will add a few of your own to the list:

1. Pantene PRO-V Shampoo – Rich and keeps locks healthy
2. Aussie DEEEEEP 3 Minute Miracle Conditioner – Super! It really works.
3. Vaseline Petroleum Jelly – I keep a jar at my desk while working and dab my lips with it all day long.
4. TRESemme Heat Tamer Protective Spray – Detangles hair and leaves no residue.
5. Olay Complete Moisture Lotion with SPF 15 – I use it as a face moisturizer and sun tan lotion.
6. Dove Beauty Bar – Creamy, great smelling soap.
7. TRESemme Shampoo – The big size – 32 ounces – is a bonus and feels pure to hair and scalp.
8. [Drug store brand] Antiseptic Mouthwash – In Vanilla Mint and Citrus favors.
9. Aussie Shampoo – Terrific stuff! [Yep ... unmistakable pattern - 5 hair products on list.]
10. Cetaphil Moisture Lotion – Dermatologists recommend it.

And finally, on your next trip don't forget to bring your manufactures' coupons and dollar rewards card for extra savings.

Garnier Whole Blends Smoothing Shampoo And Conditioner Coconut Oil & Cocoa Butter Extracts

Weighing price, convenience and effectiveness, I lean towards organic personal care products; and when it makes sense, I will switch from drugstore brands to those products with cleaner, organic ingredients. In reality, it's difficult to go totally organic -- nevertheless, we can aim to reduce the amount of chemicals we use in our beauty products.

Most shampoos will clean your hair just fine, but the commericial hair conditioners still work better than any organic conditioner I have tried. Plus, the mass produced name brands of shampoos and conditions tend to be cheaper  than many organic brands. If you wash your hair every day, the costs can add up! Will it be pennies, or dollars you wash down the drain? Sometimes it's worth the extra cost, sometimes it is not.
Shampoos are easy, but I always return to the drugstore brands of hair conditioners. Recently I tried Ganier Whole Blends Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner Coconut Oil & Cocoa Butter Extracts. Forumulated with South Pacific coconut oil and African cocoa butter extracts, the shampoo and condition tames and smooths hair. It has a clean, coconut scent and leaves a shine. Thankfully, both shampoo and conditioner are paraben-free and gentle for daily use.

While it is always wise to check ingredients, the great news is: Drugstores are responding to customer demands for better, safer ingredients. For the price, effectiveness and hair sans frizz, I recommend this new Garnier forumula. Try it, you will like it!

The Best Anti-Aging Face Products For Less

Lovely Michelle Pfeiffer could teach a master class on how to age well. Sign me up!
Aging is a good thing. You would not like the alternative! Still none of us want to look old before our time. But, anti-aging potions to keep those lines, wrinkles and age spots away can cost $100s of dollars each, making them unaffordable for oridinary consumers. So today I'm doing a roundup of the best products -- the ones that really work, but cost less than high end brands. My fountain-of-youth finds contain the same effective ingredients, yet are budget friendly enough so that you can use them everyday.

Your Daytime Routine:

Layer your morning anti-aging face products in the following order --

1. Timeless Vitamin 20% C + E + Ferulic Acid Serum - Vitamin C fights free radicals, including oxidation, which causes aging. It also stimulates the growth of new collagen and helps with sun protection. Vitamin E helps vitamin C work better. "What is ferulic acid," you may ask? Think of ferulic acid as a stabilizer and booster of vitamin C.  [Check out Timeless, a company that makes several beneficial serums for cheap, here.]

2. Timeless Coenzyme Q10 Serum + Matrixyl 3000 + Hyaluronic Acid - These are antioxidants, peptides and moisturizing ingredients. I'm using this serum around my eyes. Can't hurt!

3. Sunscreen - This is the most effective (therefore, most important!) product to minimize aging. Use a sunscreen every single day under your makeup.

Two lightweight choices include:

a) Olay Regenerist Lotion With Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 - This cream formula is interchangeable with Olay All Day Complete Moisture Lotion SPF 15, but is a slightly richer formula and will protect longer without reapplying. I like both.

b) Neutrogena UltraSheer Liquid SPF 70 - A liquid, it dries to leave no residue or stickiness. You only need to go up to SPF 30. A higher SPF factor doesn't do much more. So if there's a price difference, stop at SPF 30. If a retailer doesn't charge more for SPFs over 30, accept it as a gift.

Other recommended sunscreen products include:

c) L'Oreal's Miracle Blur with SPF 30 - An instant skin smoother finishing treatment. It's a matifier that takes away shine and helps to erase the look of lines, wrinkles and pores. The silky gel also provides a lovely base for your makeup; and finally ...

d) Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free Mineral Airbrushing Pressed Powder SPF 30 - If you use a face powder to set your makeup, why not just select one with sun protection? This one sells for about $12, and often drugstores offer a 2 for 1 deal, so you can't go wrong!

In using sunscreens, many users switch formulas to suite the time of the year. For example, I might use a creamy sunscreen like the Olay Regrenerist Lotion with SPF 50 to moisturize my face in winter, but use the Miracle Blur treatment alone in summer due to the humidity. I like to use the face powder as part of my makeup all year around -- it's a great way to ensure I'm reapplying my sunscreen.

Your Night Time Routine:

Again, follow the steps in order when layering --

1. Noxema Skin Cream - I have washed my face with Noxema since the age of 14, and I always come back to it. During a shower I usually wash with SheaMoisture Soap. It is super moisturizing and never drying, even on my face.

2. The holy grail of anti-aging skin products is prescription strength Retin-A (Tritinoin) Cream - but you must transition into using it (and it is a lengthy process); otherwise your skin will flake, feel raw, be inflamed and hurt!

Until your skin can tolerate the strength of Retin-A, you will benefit from using non-prescription retinol, available at your local drugstore. Here are a few suggestions on good retinols. Both non-prescription retinol and prescription strength retinal-A will help soften the appearance of lines and winkles, speed up cell turnover and help generate new collagen.

3. Olay Regenerist MicroSculpting Serum - It has 3 anti-aging ingredients: peptides, hyaluronic acid and Vitamin B3. I've been using this for years.

4. Follow up with a rich night cream, such as Olay Regenerist MicroSculpting Cream. It's a super moisturizing face cream. None better!

Honorable Anti-Aging Mentions:

Glycolic Acid - This brightens your skin by helping you shed dead skin and speeds up cell turnover. Many women like to alternate their use of a glycolic acid and retinol (or retinal-A).

a) THE SAVVY SHOPPER'S old friend, Angie Smith, recommends the L'Oreal Paris' Revitalift Bright Reveal line, with 4% glycolic acid.

b) Another winning brand is Planet Edan, which manufactures glycolic acid (liquids, gels and creams) in higher concentrations: Glycolic acid can penetrate the skin deeply to treat fine lines and acne. Just like with retinols and retinal-A, you must start slow when applying glycolic acid to your face. Your skin needs time to acclimate to higher strengths, or you could end up with chemical burns and scaring. Be especially careful with glycolic acid concentrations over 10%!

Non-greasy Face Moisturizers:

Here are 3 other face moisturizers with anti-aging properties that absorb easily into the skin. Apply them after face serums (and under your makeup, if you wish):

a) Olay Complete All Day Moisture Lotion - Conditions the skin with vitamins B3, C and E, along with SPF 15 sun protection. One of my staples, I use it as a face and body sunscreen - you must reapply SPF 15 sunscreen every few hours.

b) CeraVe Moisturizing Facial Lotion PM - Contains ceramides (they hold in moisture), B3 and hyaluronic acid. Plus, CVS Pharmacy makes a knockoff of this facial lotion.

c) Hyaluronic Acid Beauty Cream - Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the skin, which traps moisture to help maintain firmness and elasticity. As we age, we lose moisture. This cream lubricates the skin with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, sunflower oil and heather. It is rich without clogging your pores. Feels so clean, it is the perfect summer face moisturizer. In winter, I follow this beauty cream up with a dab of the richer Puritan's Pride's Retinol Cream on my face -- it's my one/two punch against Old Man Winter!

These top-notch youth elixirs are as effective as pricey luxury brands, but you can afford to use them every day without going broke!
