Plaid and Checkerboard Plaid For Fall 2020

Flannel shirts are a fall wardrobe staple and this year is no exception. I'm reading that checkerboard plaid is trendy. Where have fashion editors been? Plaid, including checkerboard plaid, has never gone out of style. I have a couple of checkerboard plaid shirts and jackets decades old. Truth! Classics never date, and good quality clothing outlasts the latest trends!

In their new fall catalogs, both Lands' End and L.L. Bean are offering a wide section of colors in plaid flannel shirts, tunics and jackets. The quality and style of the two competitors are hair-splitting similar. Lands' End seems to host more money-saving promotions while L.L.Bean has expanded its inventory to include plaid hoodies, dresses and bathrobes.

I have clothing and all-weather shoes from both companies. Sometimes one offers a better price, at other times the other merchant has a color left in my size. A double selection from 2 retailers always works in a customer's favor. Between the 2 there are many colors and washable fabrics! I've picked a few of my favorites: The top 4 plaids are from Lands' End, the bottom 4 plaids are L.L. Bean offerings. Tomatoes, tomaytoes all comfy and cozy!

Like flannel fabric, plaid, including checkerboard plaid, is this fall's "new" tried and true trend. Do you need to replace a wardrobe staple?

What's New At Uniqlo: Your Fall Wardrobe

As autumn returns, Uniqlo has us covered in "LifeWear" basics. You can't beat the retailer's innovation, style and value. Here are a few articles that caught my eye for our upcoming fall and winter seasons:

1) Merino-blend V-Neck Long-Sleeve Dress (top) - The dress has premium Merino wool with a touch of nylon stretch. Elegant, but easy every day wear. Available in several attractive neutral colors.
2) Women 3D Fine Merino Ribbed Long-Sleeve Dress - Designed seamless, as well as, to keep you cozy and ultra warm on frosty days. Comes in 4 colors. I love it in red. Click the dress link to see them.

3) Women Melange Wool Hooded Knitted Coat - Although the 100% wool knit is listed as a coat, it only provides the warmth of a sweater, which is all we need in early fall; and it has the look of a polished jacket. The pockets and a hood come in handy. Available in navy and brown too, but WOW, the wine is stylish!

4) Shoes and boots!👠👢
Now Uniqlo has a small collection of shoes. I have tried them on in the store, and they are comfortable. No frazzle-dazzle, just the classics: a pointed-toe pump with 2-inch block heels; rounded-toe, ankle boots with block heels; and pointed-toe flats. Unfortunately, the sizes only go up to 8, and of course, there are women who have a bigger foot. (No sizes 8.5 - 11 ... disappointing if one needs it.) Each style is ultra versatile to go with dresses, trousers and skirts.

Budget-friendly prices for a quality and flattering wardrobe. And now it's your turn to browse at Uniqlo. What do you like?

Stylish Sporty Fall Finds

No doubt about it, fall has arrived in the Western Hemisphere. With a change of seasons, perhaps you need to add a few new casual pieces to your fall wardrobe? Old Navy is located a couple of blocks from where I live, so it's impossible not to float into the store often when passing. I continue to be amazed by the quality of the retailer's leggings at ultra-affordable price points making them a steal!

The merchant tends to tweak their offerings from year to year so when you find a style you like and they go on sale, it's a good idea to buy a few pairs. You may prefer mostly cotton fabric but next year find mostly polyester or modal as choices. The waistband may change or the flare could be discontinued.

To the left are all the selections of leggings this fall, which consist of different styles, textures (meaning weaves and fabrics), and lengths.

Although 8 offerings require studying each one, a good selection is great for different body types or activities. Two Old Navy leggings I love right now include:

1) High-Waisted Ankle Leggings For Women - Although I prefer jet black, there are other colors too. They sit just below the belly button and are 96% cotton and 4% spandex. Super soft and smooth for comfort, and opaque. Lightweight yet not see-through, I highly recommend them for fall and early winter. They are warm, but not too warm for the sometimes 75-degree F days of autumn. They are fitted through the hips and waist and narrow at the ankles. At times I wear these smooth and lightweight leggings with black ankle socks under a dress in winter instead of tights for warmth with comfort, and nobody is the wiser!

2) Extra High-Waisted PowerChill Leggings For Women - They sit slightly above the belly button and contain 53% cotton, 22% polyester, 13% modal, and 12% spandex. These are light and airy, but also a tad heavier than my 1st recommendation above. Great for Pilates, yoga, or a workout. They are fitted at the hips and thighs and narrow at the ankles. The fabric offers 4-way strength with stay-dry, sweat-wicking technology. They also have an elastic waist that has an inside pocket. Unlike pair #1, they'll be warm enough to take you through the winter months and in the jet-black hue can be dressed up with ballet flats and a blazer. They also come in shorter 7/8 lengths.

3) Dr. Scholl's Women's Time Off Platform Sneakers - I'm recommending these with caveats. Not only are they cute and feminine with leggings, jeans, and dresses, but the platforms provide a measure of arch support and stable heels. Customers love how comfortable they are for walking. For sneakers they are also well priced, but here's the rub ... customers report if you wear them a lot for walking, they won't last longer than 6 months to a year. The shoes' material tends to separate from the rubber, so don't pay the full retail price but wait for a generous sale. I'd buy the Time Off Platforms on sale for $40, but not at $69 or $100. Even at the lower price, I'd be disappointed if they didn't last. To be competitive, Dr. Scholl needs to resolve this manufacturing weakness to make these stylish and supportive sneakers as durable as Nikes and Converse! Sneakers are made for walking … but sometimes a cute style we know to baby is tempting, no?

So there you are, 3 sporty styles to take you through the fall while leaving you with a few dollars to put in your leggings' hidden pocket.

Fall Fashion Trends: Hats And Sunglasses

Photo: Getty - Marc by Marc Jacobs show beret hat
As we approach the end of summer, fall is in the air. Already days are getting shorter, and nights are getting breezier.

Salt City Optics invited me to put together a blog to showcase my favorite fall hats matched with sunglasses. I am not obligated to use their perscription sunglasses as examples -- but take a look at their website -- the eyewear is right up THE SAVVY SHOPPER's alley. The optical company offers a variety of all the latest eyeglass styles at prices you would expect to pay for prescription sunglasses, plus there is a 20% discount onlineUltra stylish and affordable, so after you take proper care of your eyes with new prescription sunglasses, you will still have money left in your wallet to buy that fashion forward fall hat!

I see more people out and about wearing sunglasses these days, and it's good thing. Here's why: Sunglasses shield our eyes from the sun's harmful ultra-violet rays, which helps to prevent the development of cataracts as we age. But let's admit to wanting to look celebrity chic as we protect our precious peepers. Are you with me?

Here are my pairings of swanky hats with sunglasses to transition into the fall. What are your favorites?:

Kate Spade Darryl sunglasses
Cloche hat

Tommy Hilfiger, a classic knit hat

Oakley Changeover sunglasses

Ray-ban sunglasses

Wool Rose Applique hat

Red cloth or leather brimmed hat

Nike Ignition Rx sunglasses

Elizabeth And James Filmore sunglasses

Tommy Hilfiger fur hat

The last image of a Tommy Hilfiger fur hat is super trendy. Faux fur will be huge this fall and winter. Take a look around: There are racks of faux fur bags, shoes, vests, jackets and hats. Designers are putting fur on everything. Hello autumn!

Sales On Blazer's At Lands' End

A blazer is one of those no-brainer traditional pieces that should be in every woman's (and man's) wardrobe. It elevates an outfit and acts as a light layering piece to take you from the late summer into the fall. Depending on the style, you could also wear it in winter under your coat to complete an outfit, as well as, for warmth once you get to the office.

You can't beat the classic style and quality for the price at Lands's End. The retailer offers so many choices, structured or not structured. Fabrics include 100% linen, 100% cotton, cotton-with-a-touch-of spandex, smooth, velveteen, or knit; and the devil that is always in the details such as pockets with or without flaps, one button, 2 buttons, or 4 buttons that are shiny to stand out or not shiny to blend in. Of course, the blazers also come in timeless patterns and an assortment of mostly neutral colors.

Now might be a great time to browse. When LE runs sales, they're very good and if missed, they'll roll around again. The white 100% linen jacket (above right👆) is on sale at 70% off for $40! My gosh, what a steal!  It's a smart and comfortable wardrobe piece you'll wear forever.

Fall Back With A Bodysuit

The 70s called. It wants its bodysuit back. Forget-about-it! Bodysuits are so easy and breezy, they aren't going anywhere in the near future. Available at American Apparel, ASOSForever 21 and Urbanoutfitters, to name a few retailers, they are the new fall staple.

The benefits of a big girl onesie are several. Bodysuits are cozy and warm in cold weather. They are sleek, polished and versatile. Worn with favorite old jeans, skirts, or under a blazer, they eliminate the need for bulky shirts and sweaters, plus they stay neatly tucked in all day. I can understand having a couple of all-in-ones in your wardrobe for times when you need a top to stay in place. No unpleasant surprises where you are the last to know!

Bodysuits also come in multiple styles and sleeve lengths, from all American girl, to sexy, sporty and playful. The fabric can be sheer or textured. Which look suits you?

Stylish Layering From Uniqlo

Looks even sleeker and more stylish then it photographs.
On Saturday, the first breath of brisk autumn air hit New York City, just enough to show us that Old Man Winter was on his way.😱 That's all it took to send me out shopping in order to prepare for the biting cold ahead! Minus a set of wings, I flew over to Uniqlo, one of my favorite retailers for a few stylish layering basics. The 3 pieces I bought easily fit under a winter coat without adding bulk including:

1) Women Ultra Light Down Compact Vest - ↑ (top image)  - This item can be worn as an inner or outer layer. It repels light rain and snow. Has outside  and interior pockets, as well as, snap buttons. Takes up no room to store in a closet, or rolled up in a backpack.

2) Women Heattech Extra Warm T-shirt - Cozy and soft, yet made to handle the most extreme cold. Durable, moisture absorbing fabric you can wear as a layer or a normal top. Also comes in a crew or scoop neck ... so if you have a preference,  pay attention when placing your order.
3) Women Heattech Extra Warm Leggings - Like the matching t-shirt, the leggings are soft and stretchy for ease of moment. A high waist stays in place. Opique -- absoluely not see-through (yay!). Keeps out the cold, but absorbs moisture to feel comfortable against your skin. Wraps you in warmth and is machine washable.

I bought all 3 pieces in black for versatility to go with my entire wardrobe, but there is a selection of colors. A basic black or neutral color can mean that buying less is more!

Uniqlo's Ultra Light Down Vest Is A Steal

Uniqlo put their Ultra Light Down Vest on promotion this week for $29, so I added a second color to my wardrobe. I now own two -- one in dark navy blue and a new fun, bright pink. Not only are they an unbelievably lightweight design, but they are super warm. Layer them without bulking up! The quilted pattern is slimming and polished.

They are also easy to take on a trip. The vest comes with a pouch. You just roll it up and carry it on a plane or train. Unfold the vest when you get cold, or even improvise to use it as a pillow. The thin outer nylon material is also water resistant, so it repels moisture on a rainy autumn day. And, it has handy side pockets.

Sometimes a low price and all the pretty colors are too tempting, so I must stop myself from ordering more than I really need. The navy blue will act as my mix and match neutral color, and the bright pink will inject a little pizzazz into a dreary winter day. But if you look, the wine makes a lovely neutral color, and the red is lively too! Deciding may be hard!!

For men and women who have the height, I recommend ordering a size up for extra length, as well as, for the great combination of a fitted, yet slightly relaxed style.

If you miss this price, don't worry. Another promotion will come around again.

Your Fall Wardrobe: Shop For Value

The arrival of fall presents a good time to take stock of your wardrobe.  Put away your summer shorts and dresses and throw away what is shabby and can't be worn next year.  Now decide if there's anything you lack to get you through the colder seasons.  Perhaps you need a new wool suit, a pair of leather boots, rubber galoshes … or some stylish basics: long sleeve t-shirts, jeans, or new undergarments.  Here are five retailers to help you with your task:

Hirshleifer – This 100 year old family run store is expensive, but they have absolutely beautiful things from Rag and Bone wool blazers and Alaia flannel skirts to Yigal Azrouel zip jersey dresses and Laurence Dacade short suede booties.  This is the place to look when you want to find a few, expertly tailored, classic pieces you will wear for years to come.  Gwyneth Paltrow is a fan.  She has a big budget.  You may settle for one practical, exquisite piece, and what's wrong with that?

Lands' End – Here quality meets unbeatable prices.  Shop for cashmere cardigans, snow boots, waterproof Squall jackets and goose down Chalet winter coats.  Plus, all of their goose down vests and coats can be machine washed and dried, which means no dry cleaning bills.

Uniqlo – They design sleek basics with Japanese technology.  Get premium cotton t-shirts, easy leggings, stretch jeans, feather-light jackets (that keep you warm), innovative Airism tops, undergarments and more.  So much more that I featured Uniqlo in an earlier post.  The Airism tops provide full support, as well as, wick perspiration away.  Perfect to wear for a workout, or under a dress.
FootSmart – A retailer offering comfortable shoes and boots with just right heels, as well as, hard to find sizes and widths, plus custom designed pain relieving tools to treat specific foot problems like hammer toes and plantar fascitis.

Target – It's where to go for sports bras and premium Champion active wear.  Sells for $10 - $17.  Why pay more, when you can get it for less?

With a bit of experience under my belt, I tend to be an under buyer.  But when I need something, I buy it. Always know your budget and stick to it.  Shop for value.  As you can see, value is available at every price point. Be open, resourceful and flexible to find it!

Feast Your Eyes On Cobalt Blue

This year's New York Fashion Week featured lots of cobalt blue on the runways, one of my all time favorite colors. The deep and stable blue pigment is often used to make beautiful porcelain, jewlry and transparent glass, as well as, the most stunning ball gowns, or eye-popping everyday dresses, blazers and shoes.

It is described as this fall's hot new hue, but there's nothing trendy about it. Historically a popular color, it is soothing and grounding. Simply stated, cobalt blue is gorgeous and will never, ever go out of style. Personally, I find it somewhat intoxicating and could wear it every hour of everyday!

So just for you, my awesome readers ... THE SAVVY SHOPPER's roundup of the many possibilities:
Awww, feast your eyes on even more cobalt blue with ... a runway sampling --

... everyday Ã  la mode
... elegant home decor. (Click here and scroll down. It began life as a sherry bottle.)

... a dose of loveliness, Nine West's Ponte Bodice Dress
... MINE! I called it. What are you having? :)
