Slouchy Pants In 2022

Next year these slacks will look so dated in my humble opinion. Droopy crotches, oh my! All photos from The Style Insider

Yes, it's true: After you know your personal style, you're not always trendy. As it turns out, I have zero interest in what fashion editors and influencers tell us will be popular this year, namely Slouchy Pants.

The trendy reinvented wide-legged trousers consist of too much fabric for my liking. Can we call them oversized? Baggy?? Or sloppy??? Years ago in the 1970s, they were dubbed stovepipe pants. Harlem pants were the early 20th century's variation.

Even at 5' 7 1/4," in height, this yards-of-cloth trouser style would appear to wear me in lieu of me wearing the trousers. Not to mention, I'd rake up and clean the streets of New York City without pay.😄

For sure just like the ankle-length dresses of Summer 2021, it's a fashion fad I'll skip and continue wearing my leggings and "skinny" jeans. As a matter of fact, the style of pants I usually wear are slender, i.e., tapered ankles, not really skinny jeans. So in recent years, I don't embrace the skinny jeans look either, choosing comfort over discomfort. You get the idea.

What's fabulous about our current era is conformity is out! How sensible ... as no single style flatters all heights, shapes, or sizes. Every style is accepted, and you can dress like you! The fashion that makes you feel your best, or like a million bucks is in! So here's to everybody's unique fashion plate style.😎

Readers, how do you feel about slouchy pants? Can they ever be lightweight? How do you pack them in a suitcase? Oy vey: let's discuss the need for ironing?!

Trendy Maxi Dresses For Summer

Currently I see very long -- to-the-ankle -- maxi summer dresses for sale in all the shops. At every price point the maxi dress is making a comeback as the newest fashion trend of 2021.

I don't mind if other people wear the long length, yet as a gal who walks all over Manhattan, I'm not embracing it. It's too confining, and I don't like the feel of my knees hitting fabric as I walk all over the city. Plus, I'd clean the sidewalks with a maxi dress.

Furthermore, I'm not a fan of a sleeveless, backless long, long, long dress. It's a personal quirk of mine as I dislike the unbalanced look of it. Also if it's hot enough to wear sleeveless and backless dresses to cool off, is it not too hot to cover up your legs to the ankles? Doesn't the season and temperature dictate uniformly whether to cover or uncover all of you? Why would you want legs covered with a clump of fabric on a sizzling August day, or a bare back on a nippy one? Wouldn't the cloth be wanting or not airy enough on the top or bottom ... one of the areas, um insufficient half of the time? Just asking.

On the bright side: The new maxi trend is great for my budget; there's no temptation to add the dress to my summer wardrobe. The only one of the examples posted, I'd likely not be bugged wearing is the Vineyard Vines dress ... it looks to be a tad shorter than ankle length although one customer returned it, saying the bottom was too much dress for her. So it's risky too as I trust her review! You want to wear a dress, not have a dress wearing you!

Another fear of mine is these very long dresses will look dated by next summer. I don't see the pioneer ankle length lasting beyond 2021.

Why do you think everyday dresses are going to the ankle now? Are you a fan of the summer maxi dress?

👗👠🩳🥿👅

Just for fun, I'll list 5 wardrobe pieces you'll never see me buy or wear (not to be mistaken as judgment of others. Fashion is subjective.):

Photo: Soft Serve
1) Everyday summer sleeveless and backless maxi dresses (the subject of today's blog👆).

2) Loungewear/terrycloth/sweats - Are you kidding me? Where exactly do they look good? Not at home. Not at the gym. Not in a supermarket. Not at Walmart. Nowhere. These are nothing more than thick pajamas worn after your day should have already started!

Photo: Ugg
3) Ugg Fluff Yeah Slides - So popular I see women wearing them up and down 5th Avenue. Who began this fashion trend out in public? $100 house shoes, people! Wouldn't you rather spend the money on Ugg boots or a proper pair of walking sandals for running about New York City? You're wearing your house shoes outside the house, people!

4) I'm very much alone with this next one: Although I don't mind a feminine dipping neckline in a dress or ball gown, I would never, ever wear a gown with the cleavage split down past my breasts. Another personal quirk since the open, deep, V-cut, missing cleavage style is so prevalent on red carpets with the made-to-measure couture Oscar dresses. I don't understand it ... where's the missing front of the dress?
Don't get me wrong! I love Amanda Seyfried, the image I'm using. Mega talented; and on talk shows she's delightful with a great sense of humor and down-to-earthness in her interviews. Although I dislike the deep dive of her gown, she still looks beautiful! For the cost of the dress though, she should  have gotten all the fabric!🙂

5) Ripped, torn, worn out denim - No, no, never, ever, un, un, un! This is when I replace blue jeans. I'm not paying good money to buy 'em this way.

Feel free to chime in with your style likes or dislikes. Agree or disagree?

Save On Summer Fashion Essentials

I love how carefree and comfortable a summer wardrobe is.  In the summer there's absolutely no reason to buy anything that's high maintenance, or will require dry cleaning.  Articles of clothing can be thrown in a washer and dryer and be ready-to-wear in less than an hour.  And you can pay less for fun accessories, or a few basics than what it costs to buy a Frappuccino coffee at Starbucks.  Below are several darling, but practical essentials, along with places to go for the best value:

Old Navy – Old Navy is the place to go for summer tops.  It offers t-shirts, tanks and camis in every color, shape and style … with inexpensive, matching cardigans, shorts and flip-flops.  The t-shirts are 100% cotton and range from classic to smock to crocket-trimmed and ruffled jersey.  Usually, $6-$15, there are always promotions, so you can pick up a t-shirt for $3 and a pair of flip-flops at $1 on sale days.

Forever 21 – This retailer stocks a wide selection of ultra chic sunglasses with 100% UV protection.  Why wear sunglasses that don't shield your pupils from the sun, when you get fashion and protection for $6.50, or less?  I found a snazzy pair for $1.50.  If they are lost, no big deal.

Kmart – Has fashion-forward visors and hats.  The Joe Boxer visors keep the sun out of your face and the hair off of your neck.  They come in turquoise, hot pink, red, white, denim, navy and beige.  Attractive straw and cotton hats are priced between $10-$12.  Visors are $3.

H&M – Is the place to go for ankle and no-show socks.  Lots of colors and patterns at unbeatable prices.  7 pairs for $10 and less.  And while there, you will likely find a trendy dress, skirt, or trousers for a few bucks.

Express – Carries adorable, well-make, graphic canvas totes, leather shoulder bags and patent-leather, quilted wristlets with lots of compartments and other bells and whistles.  Costs: $15.90-$49.90.  Sign up for their emails to get $20 coupons and up to 40% off.

Lands' End – Lands' End is where men and women will always find great value and super, well-crafted clothes.  I love their assortment of "trekker" Mary Janes and sandals, as well as, the "water shoes."  If you work-out on a trend mill or run, you'll still need traditional sneakers.  For everything else, from riding a bike to long-distance walking in the woods, or on city concrete, Lands' End's trekker shoes will support your feet.  I love them because they add style when paired with dresses, leggings, jeans and shorts.  Wearing mine, I seldom put on sneakers anymore.  Look casual smart at $29.50-$39.50.

With prices like these, you can splurge without spending lots of money.  [Ideas for swimsuits here.]

Fashion At The Academy Awards

The Oscars are over.  Did you watch?  It's THE awards show people all over the world are likely to see.  Naturally, I watch for the fashions, as well as, to see who wins the awards.  Nowadays, celebrities hire a stylist, so there's mostly glamour, instead of mistakes, on the red carpet. Plus, the dresses are custom-made, highlighting a nominee's best assets and hiding any flaws. At 5'8" tall, host Anne Hathaway has the long legs and slender body to make her appear elegant and beautiful in whatever she wears. And was she ever busy ... changing an exhausting 7 times during the show!  She looked gorgous in all 8 outfits.  And now the wait: In a few days, we'll learn which designer dresses will be reproduced for the masses. Meanwhile, below is a second look at some of my favorites from last night's ceremony:

Top: Anne Hathaway is wearing a 1. Lanvin custom tuxedo and Brian Atwood heels made with Swarovski crystals; 2. vintage red Valentino Haute Couture taffeta gown with floral train; and 3. Giorgio Armani Prive custom sapphire satin gown.
Bottom: 1. Mandy Moore is wearing a Monique Lhuillier gown with crystal beads; 2. Hilary Swank has on a silver sequined Gucci gown with ombre feathered train; 3. Halle Berry shows off a Marchesa crystal encrusted gown with a ruffled train.

Whose dress(es) did you like best?

Lulus Is On Trend Fashion

Lulus opened 20 years ago (in 1996) as a mother/daughter owned clothing store. Today the venture has evolved into a leading online retailer of trendy clothing, shoes and accessories. From casual dresses to cocktail dresses, lace-up boots and black knit sneakers, the offerings are modern, feminine and sophisticated.
The dresses; separates; fashion jewelry; hats; and scarves are not investment pieces, but they are cute, hip and affordable. Everything we buy needn't be top-of-the-line. Mixing and matching different price points in a wardrobe is a time honored art. At Lulus.com you can easily find a real showstopper dress for under $45. Take for example the blue one above: Very classy and conservative up front, then turn around and bam!
Marked by eye-catching design: ''The devil is in the detail'' with (on the left) black mesh and gold sequins, forming a diamond pattern on a body fitting silhouette; or (on the right) metallic embellishes on midnight black crinkled, sheer fabric. And believe it, or not, the dresses can be hand washed in cold water!
I bought these stylish mushroom tortoise sunglasses for $8 bucks; and yet, the two-hued frames are strong and well-made!

Moreover, the Lulus website is fun to browse. There is ever changing inventory -- plus a blog section with beauty and fashion tips; celebrity interviews; and chances to win prizes, like $200.
Quite often merchandise goes on sale. Free shipping is offered on orders over $50, with free returns. Your items arrive wrapped with care too, enclosed with a note that reads, "Thanks, Gorgeous!"

Lulus is chic, cheap and sweet! Here's fair warning: Looking leads to coveting ... which leads to ordering!

Peter Pilotto For Target

Target's latest collaborator is one of London's most coveted fashion brands. Peter Pilotto -- headed by designers Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos -- is known for its innovative, colorful prints. Called classic and modern, the clothing is attractive, complex and energetic. There's a great interplay of funky flowers with graphics in the patterns, which is very warm and playful. It's a bit like looking through a kaleidoscope.

The 70-piece collection, priced from $14.99 to $79.99, includes dresses, swimwear, trousers, crop tops, tote bags and sunglasses.

The vivid line is available at Target, beginning February 9th and for the first time, internationally, through net-a-porter.com.
I love these well-thought-out and fun collections (despite some controversy).  They make luxury designs affordable to most everyone. For $40 or less, you can get a lovely vibrant dress (Some are more expensive. Wait for the sales.)

Don't be tempted to overbuy, though ... and stay away from cheap, disposable fabric. If you select wisely, the apparel from Target's partnerships with top designers will last for many seasons. My Liberty of London black, cotton dress (purchased in 2009) is still going strong.  With Peter Pilotto in tow, perhaps it's the perfect time to add a new piece to my wardrobe. How about you?

SVA's Fashion Show On Madison Avenue

Fashion created from (left) pouches and (right) Polaroids.
Students from Manhattan's School Of Visual Arts fashioned attire that is on public view on the sidewalks in front of the famous fashion houses on Madison Avenue.

Fourteen exhibits enclosed in glass run from East 61th Street through East 76th Street. The layout is called One-Of-A-Kind Luxury, and the outfits are made of unusual materials for clothing, including house keys, packing peanuts, computer keys, forks and spoons, white paint, copper pennies and orange earplugs.

Dresses designed using: 1) silverware (the bust is created from 2 ladles, the neckless is a spoon); 2) copper pennies; 3) Monopoly themes.
A cup of tea to go with a stylin' raincoat made of teabags anyone? Take a look.

Clothing created from: 1) paint; 2) Lipton teabags; 3) left - metal keys and right - packing peanuts; 4) earplugs.
Each reveal looks posh in my humble opinion. If designed out of cloth, people would want to wear them. The students are as talented and clever as the professionals whose couture shops face their creations.

Dresses made using 1) tree bark; 2) left - darts and right - computer keys; and 3) the slinky.
The art exhibit will run through November 15, and it's free! Walk down Madison Avenue for a close-up. Enlarge the photos I snapped by clicking on each one, or simply hold down your "command" and "+" keys at the same time. Here is a Print magazine link to see the 3 exhibits I do not have photographs of using: 1) tin cans, 2) wheat stalks and pencils and 3) a computer (program part). Between my blog and Print magazine (Ahh, with a better camera), you get an excellent view of the show!
