(1) [Never signing up or] cutting the cable. The average cost of cable tv bundles for an American family is $1,600 per year, and another increase is expected before 2025 ends.

(2) [Never signing up or] cancelling subscriptions. Watching the sum of not spending grow in a piggy or bank account gives you a buzz.

(3) Cooking at home and eating out less, plus looking at the supermarket flyers for sales.

(4) Walking to our destinations whenever possible to save transportation costs and the price of a gym membership!

(5) Washing, reusing and repurposing what we already own when an item is re-useable.

In a similar vein, European parents with their young children along may shop in the morning at a pastry shop with the understanding that it won’t get eaten until after dinner. They are teaching their children to plan and wait for treats.

It’s been noted that instant gratification and over consumption don’t make people happier. When you never work or wait for anything, food and material things seem to lose their value -- their specialness.

Couscous is an ancient North African dish with its roots in the cuisine of the indigenous Berber people. It's a staple food in the countries of the Maghreb region including Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia. Through North African immigration in the 1990s, the dish made its way across the Atlantic Ocean becoming popular in the Western Hemisphere. But in 1973 cookbook author Paula Wolfert played a significant role in first introducing North African flavors and couscous to American readers. Today couscous is a familiar term to everyone’s ears if not their palates!

BTW: Couscous isn’t a grain but tiny pasta. If you don’t have it in your cupboard, the recipe works with other forms of pasta.

10 Superfoods Backed By Science

I’ve willing to try broccoli sprouts.

According to Harvard Health, John Hopkins, and other medical experts, the following are Superfoods based on science, i.e. backed by controlled studies proven to keep humans healthy:

1) Broccoli Spouts - are 3 to 4 day old broccoli plants that look like alfalfa sprouts, but taste like radishes. They are super rich in glucosinolate, an antioxidant that stops free radicals from hooking up to form cancer. The whole cruciferous family of vegetables including broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts are super stars, but broccoli sprouts are like the espresso of coffee concentrated in glucosinolate.

2) Skim milk - Infants and toddlers need the fatty acids in whole milk to grow properly. For older children and adults the main benefit from drinking milk is its calcium. Skimming the milk leaves the milk with a greater percentage of calcium, 306 mg for skim vs 285 mg for whole milk per 8 oz cup.

3) Whole grains - Contain vitamins, minerals and fiber. They also have plant compounds similar to cholesterol that blocks your body from absorbing bad cholesterol.

4) Beans - The dietary fiber in beans flush cholesterol out of your body. You can count peas and peanut butter, which are also legumes, in a healthy diet.

5) Oranges - An orange a day provides an adult with a full dose of vitamin C + folate, heart-healthy B vitamins, fiber and hesperidia, a blood vessel booster found in the white spongy pith.

6) Salmon - Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids contribute to heart health by reducing triglycerides (the main constituents of natural fats and oils; high concentrations of triglycerides in the blood indicate a high risk of stroke), lowering blood pressure, and preventing plaque buildup. Additionally, omega-3s may reduce inflammation, which is linked to chronic conditions like arthritis and heart disease, and support brain function to prevent age-related decline such as dementia. In cooked canned salmon, you can also eat the calcium rich bones.

7) Dark chocolate - Contains antioxidants called flavonoids to make blood less sticky reducing the risk of clogged arteries. Eat a serving of 1.6 oz repeatedly over the course of a week to benefit. Also present is the mood enhancer phenylethyl. Good to know!

8) Tomatoes are high in vitamin C and lycopene, which has been shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. You must cook the tomatoes, though, for your body to metabolize the lycopene.

9) Olive oil contains vitamin E, polyphenols, and monounsaturated fatty acids, all which help reduce the risk of heart disease. Olive oil is 71% oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat. Studies suggest that oleic acid reduces inflammation and oxidative stress, and may even have beneficial effects on genes linked to cancer.

10) Berries are high in antioxidants such as anthocyanins, which may slowdown the cell damage caused by free radicals responsible for aging and disease. It turns out inflammation is very bad for our bodies. Berries reduce inflammation due to their high content of antioxidants, such as flavonoids and anthocyanins, which help fight oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. Compounds like anthocyanins give berries their vibrant colors and have been shown in studies to lower blood pressure, improve blood flow, and protect against inflammation-related diseases such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Many of us already know how healthy most of these 10 superfoods are, but once in a while we need a reminder least we forget. Bon Appetite!

In 1934 when Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, granddaughter of George I of Greece and great granddaughter of Tsar Alexander II of Russia married Prince George of Kent, the 4th son of George V and Queen Mary of the United Kingdom, her mother-in-law gave her the beautiful Cambridge Sapphire Parure, a family heirloom that was made for Queen Mary's grandmother, Princess Augusta, Duchess of Cambridge, who left the jewels to her daughter, Grand Duchess Augusta of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Queen Mary’s aunt. In 1916, the aunt willed her sapphire parsue to her favorite niece, Queen Mary, who presented the set to her new daughter-in-law.

The tiara could also be worn as a necklace.

A parure is a set of jewelry that is meant to be worn together. Princess Marina received a tiara, a necklace, 2 bracelets, 2 brooches, earrings, and a corsage jewel. I’ve combed the internet for photos to show the jewelry, most of the images were taken in black and white or later in life as Princess Marina wore her Cambridge Sapphire Parure for decades to carnations and state dinners.

When Princess Marina died in 1968 she left the Cambridge Sapphire Parure to her daughter-in-law, Katharine, the new Duchess of Kent, who in 1961 had married Prince Edward, Marina’s eldest son.

Unfortunately as time passed, the Kents couldn’t afford to keep the parure in tact. Some of its stones were sold and eventually all of its pieces disappeared from public view, presumed auctioned and bought by private collectors. It’s sad to see these historic pieces broken up and not end up in a museum.

Tips: If you do splurge on jewelry never pick pieces so fancy they stay in a box most of the year. Don’t be afraid of lab-grown stones either. Lab-grown gemstones are physically, chemically, and optically the same as natural gemstones, but cheaper. People will pay more for natural gemstones, yet jewelry is never an investment. You will rarely make a profit by selling your jewelry. Find classic pieces within your budget that you can pair with a little black dress, as well as, blue jeans. When jewelry stays in a box, it's a complete waste of money -- a splurge gone wrong!👑

Be sure to visit Tiffany, as well as, the gemstone wings of the Natural History Museum in New York and the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. to see the heirloom gemstones when you're in the towns, and Macy’s Herald Square for the commercial grade sparklers. Also, inexperienced buyers are more apt to get taken than to score a good deal in NYC's diamond district. The vibe is to sell and it's not much fun to browse there.

Please Bring Back The Original COACH Cassie

As a value shopper I’ve lost out on buying a few items I’ve waited to go on sale. It’s the risk you take when trying to stick to your budget. THEN I had a suitable everyday COACH handbag and didn’t feel comfortable spending $350 for a new bag I wanted, but didn’t really need at that movement, even one to this day I fawn over. Not pulling the trigger if you’re not deprived is a sensible best practice in money management. Often buying too far into the future ends up being a waste of money. Your needs change, or a better version of an item you covet launches. 

Well here we are in the future. The time has come for me to buy a new everyday leather handbag, so the original COACH Cassie (a medium size bag) is the one that got away! Such a classic handbag, COUCH surprised me by discontinuing it! True COACH fans never saw it coming!

The original COACH Cassie is 10" (L) x 7 1/4" (H) x 1 3/4" (W) with a top handle, outside pocket, turnlock closure and crossbody strap -- every characteristic I need and love!

I refuse to pay the inflated prices of the Cassies listed on the pre-loved market, costing more or the same as what it sold for new in pristine condition at COACH retail stores. If not a bargain, we should pass on buying a seller's used purse!!!

Therefore, I’m appealing to (um imploring, begging) COACH to reissue this classic bag in its larger size. I don’t care if COACH makes it slightly bigger, but I can’t use smaller dimensions in an everyday bag. Also please keep the super cute top handle as is. The looser top handles in the smaller COACH Cassie 19 or 17 isn’t as stylish. (I don’t understand the small bag craze at all. Costing nearly as much as a full-sized bag, yet you can’t fit your essentials inside! Waste of money!! Heck, just go with your pants pocket.😂) Finally, I prefer either pebbled leather or glovetan leather! Glovetan leather would be a dream!!!

Readers, the Cassie was inspired by the Court, a vintage COACH messenger bag in glovetan leather. If reissued, I’d buy either, or, and be over the moon!🦖

Manufacturers Where Are the Refills?

I share a frustration with a lot of consumers. Reluctantly I buy a lot of mops to clean my floors. When it's time to replace the sponge head, I can never find my present mop's refills anywhere. It sucks to have to buy a whole new mop when all I need is its replacement sponge. Talk about waste in a throw away society!

Presently I have a Quickie mop. I bought the brand from the drugstore that is a stone’s throw away from my Manhattan apartment. The drugstore no longer sells the mops or its refills. Home Depot has refills for Quickie mops, but not for my model.

I don’t think it’s an accident either. A Google inquiry confirms my suspicions. We can’t get the replacement sponges for our mops frequently due to a business practice called build-in-obsolescience. Manufactures often make subtle changes to the the design rendering older refills obsolete. I’m far from a conspiracy theorist, and I’m chill about many things in everyday life, but I know I’m not imagining this practice as there’s an official name for it!

As long as I’m on a pet peeve roll, allow me to ask, why do mops and a few other tools and devises have to use unique connection systems that only fit the exact model they are designed for? Logically they don’t! There’s absolutely no practical reason except to increase revenue that some very common things everybody owns such as mops, plastic storage carts, or even Apple iPhones can't standardize their replacement parts, for examples, sponge heads (for mops) wheels (for plastic storage carts) or charging plugs (for iPhones) giving customers universal use for newer models especially within the same brands! It’s insane that every damn newer version of a tool or devise uses its own unique size of connection parts!

Of course a short-term solution is to buy extra refills for future use (urrr, accept and give the manufacturer the money). Another course of action is to look for generic knockoffs (i.e., pay a copycat competitor). 

Still, what else can consumers do? Let’s start with mops, shall we? Have you found a mop brand that you’ve been able to get the sponge refills for year after year? If so, it’d surely be my next mop because I’ve had it!😠😡

Supermarket Plastic Produce Bags Rock

Let's discuss a bag equally as valuable and practical as a fine leather bag, namely a supermarket plastic produce bag! I’ll explain. 

Dispite buying a few sizes of Ziploc bags, I find supermarket plastic produce bags much more versatile, flexible, and useful for both storage and holding smaller quantities of food one needs to contain before dropping them into the trash. In Manhattan we put garbage down a compacter, as well as, separating it for recycling bins.

I try to be as neat as possible for the benefit of our maintenance men. Food scrapes and toiletries I can fit easily into these bags’ wide opening, and I tie the opening in a Boy Scout knot to close and leak proof it as it goes down the chute. 

What’s more, supermarket plastic produce bags are idea to separate articles that need to be stored away. Plastic produce bags are both strong and thin, taking up no additional space. Christmas decorations can be organized before going into drawers or huge Tupperware containers. What makes  these bags so perfect is again their wide opening, plus you can see your contents to know exactly what’s inside when you go to retrieve your items.

I have also used these plastic bags to enclose liquids such as suntan lotion, face creams, shampoos and conditioners before packing them into a suitcase or on a shelf at home when I fear a liquid could leak. The mess stays inside the bag without leaking on a shelf or inside a suitcase. 

After I arrive at my destination, I place dirty clothes in these bags, as well as, shoes so they won’t touch my clean clothes inside my suitcase.

At home I put raw beef and chicken inside supermarket plastic produce bags to first store them in my freezer, then to defrost the meats in my refrigerator.

If you are without containers to store flour and sugar, you can enclose them inside these plastic produce bags,  the tops secured with our trusty Boy Scout knot. Residual flour and sugar from their packaging ends up inside the plastic bags not inside your cupboards to clean.

They work so well to store all kinds of goods! I highly recommend repurposing your plastic produce bags that you bring home from the supermarket once you remove your produce. Think free storeage plastic bags. Not too big or too small but just the right size for so many jobs! Plastic produce bags never seem to develop holes from their travel home from the supermarket! Don’t toss them out as garbage, re-use them for garbage or storage bags. Personally, I don’t buy as many Ziploc bags as I once did.

Moreover, if you need more plastic produce bags than you carry home from the supermarket, you can buy them from Walmart, Amazon or ReStockIt. Who knew?

The Honey Deuce

In September there’s a lot of talk about a mixed drink called the Honey Deuce, the official cocktail of the US Open. Created by mixologist Nick Mautone in 2006 and featured in Grey Goose’s cookbook, it features 3 fresh honeydew melon balls to represent tennis balls. At the US Open this year, it costs: $23. Drinking is expensive, no doubt about it.

Here’s how to make the cocktail at home:

The Honey Deuce

Ingredients:

1 1/2 ounces vodka - the US Open uses Grey Goose
3 ounces lemonade - A simple lemonade recipe combines lemon juice, simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water) and water.
1/2 ounce raspberry liqueur - the US open uses Chambord
3 honeydew melon balls, for garnish

If making cocktails for a crowd, mix the following larger quantities in a pitcher:

16 ounces vodka, 32 ounces fresh lemonade, 8 ounces raspberry liqueur.

Directions:

1) Fill a tall glass with ice.

2) Add the vodka, lemonade and respberry liqueur. 

3) Stir to mix.

4) Make 3 honeydew balls with a melon baller.

5) Place the balls across the top of the glass. The US Open threads the melons on a skewer.

This is a tasty drink even I (who usually skips mixed drinks for a simple glass of red wine paired with food) finds refreshing probably because during the summer, I drink water flavored with raspberry lemonade water enhancer, the only variety I think has much flavor.

So if you never drink alcohol, a raspberry lemonade flavor enhancer added to a glass of icy water is super refreshing too. Bottles up -- or in this case glasses up ... to your lips!

Did you know that Mother Earth makes 2 types of green garnets? Demantoid garnets were originally found in Russia’s Ural Mountains in 1851 and Tsavorite garnets were later discovered in East Africa in 1967.

A demantoid Ca3Fe2(SiO4)3 is an andradite garnet while a tsavorite Ca3Al2Si3O12 is a grossular garnet.

Tsavorite is a rich, deep green like emeralds. Its color is derived from chromium and vanadium. A yellow tint from ferric iron is more characteristic of demantoid garnets.

A demantoid garnet has a higher dispersion and refractive index than a tsavorite garnet, giving it more fire*, brilliance* or sparkle.

A tsavorite garnet is harder, registering 7 - 7.5 on Mohs Hardness Scale compared to the softer demantoid garnet at 6.5 - 7.

While both are rare mineral gemstones, high-quality demantoids (from Russia) are often considered the standard for green garnets and are highly sought after for their intense sparkle and rare horsetail inclusions. These inclusions are feathery golden threads of chrysotile that curve to resemble the tail of a horse. 

Tsavorite

Tsavorites are valued for their vibrant green hues and durability. Tsavorites are brighter and cleaner (meaning they have fewer inclusions) than emeralds.

At Tiffany and Co, I remember seeing demantoid garnets in a showcase that were yellow tinted and sparkled like crazy. Tiffany is known for its top of the line colored gemstones. Once again, we have to marvel at the spectacular beauty and versatility of Mother Nature!
